Canon V1 Overview

A Compact Content Creation Powerhouse
Get everything you need for content creation in a powerful, portable package with the Canon PowerShot V1. This camera expands on Canon's "V" series of video-first cameras with feature sets that are ideal for vlogging, live streaming, and more. Packed with technology designed to enhance image quality and performance—including a newly developed 22.3MP 1.4"-type CMOS sensor and a cooling fan—the V1 is a class-leading option for creators looking for an intuitive tool for capturing and creating videos and photographs.
Newly Developed 22.3MP 1.4" CMOS Sensor
Canon has pushed compact camera sensor development even further with the newly designed 22.3MP 1.4" CMOS in the PowerShot V1. This sensor is approximately twice as large as at 1" sensors found in comparable models enabling the V1 to deliver imagery with greater detail, higher dynamic range, and improved low-light performance. This sensor also features Dual Pixel CMOS II for PowerShot which will quickly and accurately lock onto a range of subjects and has been enhanced with pupil detection.
Versatile Ultra-Wide 16-50mm Power Zoom Lens
The built-in lens of the PowerShot V1 provides an ultra-wide to normal zoom range that is ideal for handheld, everyday shooting.
  • 16-50mm equivalent zoom range with a maximum aperture of f/2.8-4.5.
  • Optical IS helps ensure smooth video and sharp photographs.
  • Built-in 3-stop ND filter for working in bright lighting scenarios.
Advanced UHD 4K Video Recording
Optimized for content creators, the PowerShot V1 delivers high-quality 4K video recording at up to 60p with plenty of format and frame rate options to suit a wide range of shooting situations.
  • Full-width 4K video recording at up to 30p. By oversampling from a 5.7K image area, the V1 will deliver sharper, cleaner, and more detailed 4K video.
  • High-speed 4K 60p with a 1.4x crop.
  • Canon Log 3 profile for recording high dynamic range footage and 10-bit color.
  • Movie Digital IS works in conjunction with the lens' optical IS system for smoother video recording. Subject Tracking Image Stabilization further optimizes stabilization based on the location of the subject in the frame.
  • Built-in cooling fan allows for long, uninterrupted recording even at 4K 60p.
  • Built-in three-microphone array and included windscreen.
  • Mic and headphone jacks are available for proper audio recording and monitoring.
Shooting Modes
Designed to make the camera ideal for content creators of all types, Canon has developed and integrated various shooting modes to make shooting even easier.
  • Smooth Skin Movie applies smart corrections to an individual shot.
  • Movie Close-Up mode will automatically focus on products or items brought closer to the camera to highlight them in the shot before returning to the original subject when moved out of view.
  • Three customer shooting modes can be registered for stills or video shooting.
Intuitive Control Scheme & Ergonomics
  • Fully articulating 3.0" touchscreen allows for easy selfies and vlogging.
  • Tally light on the front of the camera confirms active recording.

Everything but the Lens

I have been a fan of Canons advanced point and shoots for years and this is a strange bit of good and bad but I’m also glad it exists and even that I own it. The video works wonderfully in almost all regards and functions. The fam works wonders though still can’t negate the battery life. The sensor size increase means it isn’t pocketable anymore but the bitter issue is that canon small sensors just aren’t as good as others and despite the size increase it isn’t much better than the 1” Sony sensors of old. The good is that because it’s a Canon sensor the autofocus actually works well in video. The photography side is not as great. The biggest issue is the lens that while relatively fast and sharp just doesn’t have the reach that I wanted. I realize that it is for video and vloggers but 24mm is fine. I say that as someone that has used the G7xiii for that purpose and it works great. If you want to isolate a subject you really just can’t with this. There is no zoom or portrait length and while I know some will argue 50 is a portrait length just remember you now have a smaller sensor so compensation isn’t what you could do with the old 1”. So why get this over the G7xiii. Well 4k video if you need it for longer recording sessions, especially if you can plug it in. A small footprint home studio video camera with goo tracking autofocus. I might also suggest this for some real estate agents on a budget that includes the lens. Still not a bad c camera that can work as an A camera but not nearly as versatile and feels lacking for a lot of jobs.

Asked by: Salwa
Both the Canon PowerShot V1 Digital Camera and the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III Digital Camera can shoot photo and vlog. The G7X III is physically designed for both video and photo shooting, hence the built-in flash, while the V1 body is meant more for video shooting.
