CalDigit TS5 Plus Overview

Get the most out of your desktop or laptop setup with the TS5 Plus Thunderbolt 5 Dock from CalDigit. This dock connects to your Windows, macOS, or iPadOS system using a 120 Gb/s Thunderbolt 5 host port that also provides up to 140W of charging power.

CalDigit has designed this dock to also feature two Thunderbolt 5 ports that provide speeds up to 80 Gb/s and up to 36W of charging power, five 10 Gb/s USB-C ports, five 10 Gb/s USB-A ports, one DisplayPort 2.1 port, one 3.5mm front combo audio in/out port, one rear audio out port, and one rear audio in port. These ports, plus one SD 4.0 UHS-II slot and one microSD 4.0 UHS-II slot allow for extra peripheral connections, file transfers, and device charging. Additionally, the inclusion of a 10 Gigabit ethernet cable, means that you can add gigabit ethernet speeds to your setup with ease.

Thunderbolt 5
The TS5 features four 80 Gb/s bi-directional Thunderbolt 5 ports, which is double the performance of Thunderbolt 4. The PCIe performance of the the Thunderbolt ports have been doubled from the previous generation to 64 Gb/s PCIe 4.0. This is ideal if you are intending on connecting high performance SSDs or RAID devices to the TS5. This powerful dock will support transfer speeds up to 6200 MB/s.
140W Power Delivery
With the aid of an included 330W power supply TS5 Plus provides up to 140W of power delivery for even the most demanding laptops. For laptops or tablets that require less than 140W, the TS5 Plus will only supply the wattage required by your device.
Single, Dual, or Three Displays
Whether you need a high-resolution display, a high-refresh rate display, or up to 3 external displays, the TS5 has you covered.

Single Monitor: If you're looking to add a single monitor to the TS5 you can connect it to one of the spare Thunderbolt 5 ports. If you wish to connect an HDMI monitor you can use a USB-C to HDMI adapter.

Dual Monitors: macOS users on base M4, M1/M2/M3/M4 Pro, M1/M2/M3/M4 Max, M1/M2/M3 Ultra, or Intel based Macs can connect up to dual displays. Windows PC Thunderbolt 5 and Thunderbolt 4 users can connect up to dual displays.

Triple Monitors: Only Windows PC users with Thunderbolt 5 can connect up to three displays on supported host computers.

Bandwidth Boost
When you connect bandwidth intensive monitors to the TS5 Plus it will enable Bandwidth Boost in order to prioritize displays, and provide up to 120 Gb/s performance. This will then keep 40 Gb/s for the rest of the dock. The great thing about this is that it will allow for higher refresh rate displays to be connected to the TS5 Plus as well as three 4K 144 Hz displays.
Dual USB Controllers
The TS5 Plus is unique device due to the dual USB controllers configuration. Traditional Thunderbolt docks feature a single USB controller that all of the USB, and Thunderbolt ports on the dock share. The TS5 Plus' dual controllers allow the dock to provide two individual 10 Gb/s controllers for increased bandwidth to connected devices. This is a great solution for anyone adding multiple high bandwidth USB devices to their dock.
Docking Station Utility
Individually disconnecting all the external drives connected to a dock can be a hassle. To solve this, CalDigit includes a free macOS utility that allows you to instantly disconnect all of your connected external drives with one click.

CalDigit TS5 Plus Reviews

Unreadable Font

I’ve been using the hub for about a month. The unit itself appears to function as advertised. From a compatibility perspective, it’s disappointing that CalDigit chose to only provide a single HDMI jack. Since both of my external monitors are HDMI, I also have to use an additional small Anker converter on one of them… which defeats the whole purpose of having a dock. What’s really frustrating me though, from a usability perspective, is that some knucklehead thought it was a good idea to make color of the unit darker. Why they did this I have no idea. With the darker exterior you cannot read any of the nearly identical colored small font printed on the device. Especially, when used in a dimly lit studio setting. I have to use my flashlight to locate fast charging USB-C on the front of the device. The font is simply unreadable. They failed at executing the simplest detail. For this oversight… they earn a single star.

Perfect for my docking setup

I did my research on the dock that I would need to connect my MacBook Pro to my external monitor and drives. After reading up and watching endless YouTube videos, CalDigit kept coming out as the better brand to pick. The TS5 Plus is their latest model and may be just a little overkill but I’m sure glad I went with it. This packs quite a punch. Do your own research and you’ll see that this is a serious contender.
