FUJIFILM X-E5 Overview

Innovation and Flexibility with an Iconic Silhouette
Combining the versatility of interchangeable lenses with the 40.2MP APS-C sensor and the classic, compact design of the X100VI, the FUJIFILM X-E5 Mirrorless Camera delivers advanced image-capturing technology in an analog-inspired package. Designed for creatives who desire more tactile camera operation, the X-E5 features five-axis IBIS, AI-powered auto focus, 14-bit Raw photos, and 6.2K 29.97 fps video. Among the multitude of physical controls is a dedicated film simulation dial that allows quick and convenient navigation between FUJIFILM's preset stocks and three user-customizable settings.
40.2MP X-Trans CMOS 5 HR Sensor & X-Processor 5
Borrowing the 40.2MP APC-C X-Trans 5 HR sensor and X-Processor 5 imaging engine from the X100VI, the X-E5 captures vivid video up to 6.2K and striking still images in Raw, JPEG, HEIF, and TIFF formats. This upgraded image-processing system allows for a lower base ISO of 125, minimizing grain and improving low-light performance, and enables the integrated deep-learning AI to identify a wider range of subjects for improved auto focus. With higher resolution comes the ability to get closer to subjects by cropping, and the X-E5 provides this in the form of a teleconverter with digital zoom settings of 1.4 and 2.0x. The native 125 to 12,800 ISO is expandable, reaching a range of 64 to 51,200 in photo mode, and 64 to 25,600 in video mode.
Professional Photo Capture
Designed with street photographers in mind, the FUJIFILM X-E5 merges portability with performance. Capturing stills in a variety of different formats, it provides remarkable straight-out-of-camera images and ensures maximal quality for those who like to tinker in post.
  • Raw 14-bit, HEIF 4:2:2 10-bit, TIFF 8-bit, and JPEG still-image formats
  • Maximum resolutions of 7728 x 5152 (3:2), 7728 x 4344 (16:9), and 5152 x 5152 (1:1)
  • Minimum shutter speeds of 1/4000 (mechanical) and 1/180,000 (electronic)
  • Continuously shoot uncompressed Raw images at up to 20 fps with a 1.29x crop
  • Long exposure up to 1 hour in bulb mode, 15 minutes in all other photo modes
Customizable Film Emulation
Pairing the digital innovation of FUJIFILM's Film Simulation modes with a physical, on-camera dial, the X-E5 provides an ergonomic way to customize the look and feel of images as they are captured. Located next to the viewfinder, the dial's selected setting is visible through a circular window on the X-E5's aluminum top plate. It features a selection of FUJIFILM's preset Film Simulation modes and three user-assignable modes that allow creators to customize and save their own recipes for fast recall in the field. The X-E5 includes 20 unique Film Simulation modes, including PROVIA/Standard, Velvia/Vivid, ASTIA/Soft, Classic Chrome, REALA ACE, PRO Neg. Hi, PRO Neg. Std, Classic Neg., Nostalgic Neg., ETERNA Cinema, ETERNA BLEACH BYPASS, ACROS, ACROS + Ye Filter, ACROS + R Filter, ACROS + G Filter, Black & White, Black & White + Ye Filter, Black & White + R Filter, Black & White + G Filter, and Sepia.
Versatile Video Recording
Capable of shooting high-quality 6.2K, UHD 4K, DCI 4K, and Full HD footage in multiple formats, the X-E5 is as dependable recording video as it is snapping stills. The compact hybrid's AI-powered autofocus keeps subjects sharp, while its frame rate and compression options ensure flexibility in post.
  • Maximum frame rate of 29.97 fps in 6.2K, 59.94 fps in 4K, and 240 fps in Full HD
  • 425-point intelligent hybrid auto focus with AI-based subject detection
  • Record in H.265 and H.264 formats with Long GOP video compression
  • Bitrates up to 200 Mb/s at all resolutions for exceptional sharpness and color reproduction

Dynamic Accessibility
For media playback, preview, and menu navigation, the X-E5 features a 3" touchscreen LCD with three-axis tilting and 1.04m-dot resolution. Offset to the left side of its aluminum top plate is the X-E5's rangefinder-style OLED viewfinder. With a 2.36m-dot resolution, .62x magnification, and 100% coverage area, the EVF provides an accurate preview of the camera's capturing area. Emulating a viewfinder from an analog SLR, the EVF can be switched into Classic Display mode, which creates a clean visual interface with only the exposure information remaining. Both the touchscreen LCD and the EVF offer three Surround View modes that dictate whether the outside edge of a frame is outlined, semi-transparent, or fully blacked-out when shooting in aspect ratios other than 3:2.
Improved Stabilization
Built for on-the-go photographers and videographers, the X-E5 packs in-body image stabilization into a compact, lightweight form factor, minimizing camera shake in challenging conditions.
  • Provides five-axis sensor-shift IBIS while remaining portable
  • Up to seven stops of stabilization at center frame and six stops at the edges
  • Shoot sharp, low-light images at slower shutter speeds without a tripod
  • The system's new algorithm and upgraded gyro sensor improve performance.
Classic Design
With its aluminum top plate, improved grip, and timeless rangefinder design, the X-E5 is as aesthetically pleasing as it is sturdy. The analog-style controls provide the user with a tactile experience inspired by film cameras, allowing immediate access to core functions without the need to navigate the digital menu. For added convenience, the shutter speed dial not only includes a multitude of preset speeds, but also an "A" setting for aperture priority, and a "P" setting for program mode. The X-E5 also sports two user-assignable function buttons, a dedicated Bluetooth button, an exposure compensation dial, and a four-position lever for switching between teleconverter modes.
Connectivity & Compatibility
Taking advantage of FUJIFILM's wide range of X-mount optics and accessories, the X-E5 supports interchangeable lenses and features expansive wired and wireless connectivity.
  • Works with over 40 X-mount optics and accessories, including the XF 23mm f/2.8 R WR

FUJIFILM X-E5 Reviews

Great little camera with software issues

By Kai

Great camera with several annoying software issues that Fujifilm should fix: 1) Manual focus aids and Focus Check stay active even with a half shutter press. Requires an additional function button mapped to disable those when shooting MF 2) Sluggish startup time (3-5 seconds) and sometimes failing to turn on, especially from sleep. I try not to rush, because I'm guaranteed to miss shots anyways within 5 seconds of picking up the camera 3) Slow photo playback, especially with the Fujifilm 23mm f2.8 lens attached. Take an extra 2-3 seconds to review photos, and 1-2 seconds to go back to shooting mode compared to with a Voigtlander lens attached. 4) Eye sensor too sensitive when using the Drive/Delete button and film simulation dial. I prefer not using eye sensor when shooting, but this still bugs me in Playback when deleting photos. Otherwise, the camera is a dream compact camera with good manual controls with clear markings. It makes (almost) all the right compromises, I just with Fuji would fix the bugs. My 13 year old Lumix GM1 is much snappier booting up, focusing, shooting, and reviewing photos.

Super convenient camera!
