These are nice units for money. We have 4 of them around the grounds of an outdoor public swim club. Each speaker is 12-16 feet off the ground. I was worried at first that the 4.7 inch cones wouldn't provide the volume we need, but that concern was put to rest the first hot weekend after they were installed. Even tapped at half-power, the units can overcome the din of 150 kids playing in the water. The speakers are sold for paging applications as a better sounding alternative to compression-horns, and they live up to that billing. Running a Shure 527B paging microphone through a DBX 286s channel strip with some compression, and a TOA A-906MK2 amplifier, the speakers (and system) deliver great sound ... high intelligibility with none of the edginess typical of small compression-horns. As an afterthought, we have used the TOA speakers to play music, but only a few times as the results are disappointing. The speakers work, but due to their lightweight plastic enclosures, they have the tinny sound of a boom box. If you plan to run music through your speakers look for some with a more rigid enclosure. The TOA CS-304u should probably not be a first choice. The cosmetics of the unit blend in with the facade of the buildings and their light-weight build makes them easier to hang. The mesh grill would be too flimsy for frequent handling, but since the speakers are permanently installed, the grills only need to deter birds from building nests inside, and I'm hopeful about that. Our speakers have been installed for one summer as I write this, so we have nothing to report regarding their ability to stand up to the elements over the long-haul. Hang them under an eave, and keep your fingers crossed. The speakers do what we need and we like them; but if you want to use them for music, they probably should not your first choice.
