Zoom H4 Overview

  • 1Description

The Zoom H4 is a handheld 4-track stereo digital recorder. It is ideal for recording interviews, lectures, podcasts, live performances, meetings, and classes. The unit has two built-in condenser microphones in an X/Y pattern for true stereo recordings. It also has two XLR/Phone combo jacks with phantom power, which allow you to connect the microphone or instrument of your choice. The H4 can record high-quality digital sound at up to 24-bit/96 kHz.

The H4 records to Secure Digital (SD) Media (128MB included) in either WAV or MP3 formats. The H4 can record up to 34 hours on a 2GB SD Card in MP3 stereo mode. The unit also has several built-in studio effects, such as compression, limiting and mic modeling, as well as guitar and bass amplifier modeling effects.

Able to record continuously for up to four hours on just two AA batteries, the H4 also sports a USB port for easy transfer of your audio to a PC or Mac. This also allows the H4 to act as a USB interface. Simply plug your mic into the H4, and plug the H4 into your computer via the included cable and record directly to your hard drive. The H4 comes bundled with Cubase LE, for easy editing of your recordings.

All of these features packed into one palm-sized unit make the H4 ideal for journalists, "on-the-go" musicians, and students who need to archive every word out of the professor's mouth.

Note: In order to ensure compatibility with Windows Vista and Mac OSX Leopard, and the highest capacity SD cards, please visit www.zoom.co.jp and make sure you have the latest firmware for your H4.

    Zoom H4 Reviews

H4 Mobile Stereo Field Recorder is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 54.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Big things come in small packages. This thing rocks. Everytime I power it on, I find something new that it does. It is so easy to set up and record, not to mention the quality. I have used this to record live music events. Let me tell you, it sounds like a studio recording. I have a 2gb card in mine, and I can record at 48kHz with 16bit for 3 hours. I also love the fact that it has 1/4 and xlr jacks. I use both all the time. Battery life is amazing, its light and easy to use, and it has a tripod adapter plate. I am very pleased with this product. I'm glad that I saved almost $100 by getting this one and not the H4n. If I could do it again, I would stick with this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from H4 Tripod Just an addition to the ongoing debate regarding the H4 tripod holder. Just by accident I noticed that it fits a camera tripod perfectly with no additions. I use a small table-top camera tripod and have not had any problems. If you try to use a mic stand, you'll need an adaptor. Just bring along your lightweight camera stand instead. The unit is very small and light and lugging a mic stand along for it is certainly overkill. Expertise: 20 years in Radio and OBs Previous Equivalent Item Owned: Tascam Portable DAT, MD players, Sony industrial portable Cassette Items I Recommend: 2Gb card, extra foam mic covers since mine got lost

Rated 5 out of 5 by from filmmaker meets musician Did I get your attention? It's a small group of people but for those of us that are members, finding toys that can work in both lives are hard to come by. And well priced?, even harder. And Small?- Hardest! This one can capture sound from a boom mic even while mounted on the pole! or sit in your backpack while you hold the camcorder. it can sit on your lap in the car and let you multi track an entire song while you commute. - it's small enough and easy enough to turn on that you can use it as a voice recorder for creative ideas as a MP3 and still have plenty of room for the pro sound stuff.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great quality, simple to use Really simple to use. Sounds excellent. I've read a few comments about this device having a complex user interface, and while some of the standard 4-track functions are a little fiddly the key field functions are simple and quick. this device is really easy to use. Can only record 2 tracks at a time either internal mics or external inputs. So only sort of a four track recorder. Have had for a couple of weeks, and used as a field recorder and additional mic on a 4 mic setup. Both modes worked great. Using with an 8GB card and no issues even though the spec only shows up to 4GB.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good Features but Not Suited To Pros This is a feature packed unit for the roving sound recordist, BUT if you're shooting pictures to go with the sound look elsewhere! If you are buying this device to record sound for Film or Video DON'T! Otherwise be prepared to re-synchronise every couple of minutes of your audio in post. The internal clock on these H series recorders is not even remotely sync accurate which means it won't match up with video footage recorded at the same time which in my opinion negates all of the unit's great features. I also use a cheap well-known brand MP3 Player/Voice Recorder and that has perfect sync so I can't understand why Zoom would have overlooked such an important issue - perhaps they thought only musicians would buy this? Sorry but I've had this unit for over a year and I would not recommend it for professional film or video work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow! Just, WOW! This a really great recorder! It gives great audio wihout spending tons of money.I used it for when I make videos. It eliminates all of the mechanical buzz of a video camera's on-camera mic. The XLR inputs are nice to have so that you can plug in shotgun mics or plug the H-4 into a PA to record concerts, etc..Here's a video that I did comparing the Zoom H-4 with the microphone on my video camera. ...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Video Sync REQUIRES 48kHz! The number of samples must be evenly divisible by the field and line rate of video which are fulfilled by either 32kHz or 48kHz rates (at 16 bit). Recording at 44.1kHz will *guarantee* a rapid loss of sync. I am assuming that this must be the problem behind all of the lack of sync complaints.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very handy unit I am currently using this product as a field recorder for my Sennheiser EW100 series lapel mic. The quality of audio recorded is perfect for my uses (internet skits, short films, and weddings). I am currently only using the 44.1kHz setting and it seems to have better audio quality then my old XL1 (using the sennheiser mic on both). I have not used the onboard mics so I can't comment on their quality. Having used it for around 2 weeks now I can say that the build quality is the main week point of this product. But at this price, and with the features it has I still give it a 5 star rating.
