Solid but annoying

The quality seems really good from first impressions. however I have two complaints. For how much this costs, these shouldn't be problems. 1. There is no way to easily remove the XLR cable that is included with the arm. There is a ton of cable and since I won't be using it, it's just getting in the way. 2. There's no way to rotate which way the microphone is facing. You can only move it up and down. You have to have some way to rotate the microphone on it's own which is less than ideal.

Overall the desk arm is a good product. It's quiet when you move it and will hold the mic where you leave it. The only thing about it that is a little frustrating is where the cage screws into the arm. It's hard to get the cage screwed in super tight. You may need a wrench to do it.

High Quality Mic Arm

A while back, I purchased an Audio-Technica AT2020 microphone after carefully reading reviews on many different models. I decided to purchase their starter pack that included an arm. The arm that came would hold the mic up, sometimes. Even with just the microphone installed, it would droop and fail to stay in place. The screws included loosened up easily, I replaced them with some better hardware but it barely helped. I decided to look into a higher quality replacement, which turned out to be extremely difficult, seeing as they all pretty much look the same. I did my research and decided on this K&M 23850 mic arm. Once unpacked, the quality difference is obvious. The arm is made out of larger, thicker material and is much more heavy duty, being at least 50% larger than the AT arm it replaced. Anywhere I move it, it stays. It took a LONG time to find, but this arm is actually made in Germany as well! I purchased the optional screw in mount and expect it to last a long time. It looks the same as the cheaper arms, but it's in a completely different category. A+

Is there a way to adjust the XLR cable? They left WAY too much slack at the end where the mic goes. If so, how?
Asked by: Brian
You can't swap the cable out. It's built into the stand routed through the metal and clamped down.

question

Can it be used with an Electrovoice RE20?
Asked by: Anonymous
Not sure, but, it's very sturdy, and has a standard thread mic mount. It can be adjusted just about any way you want. I have a Rode NT1 on mine and it works great. I wouldn't be afraid of putting a heavier mic on this arm.

Can this be mounted upside down? I have a strong shelf about 1 foot from my ceiling I'd like to clamp this to and have it hang upside down.
Asked by: Patrick
No, the mount for this stand is not intended to hold the arm upside down. You may want to consider using a wall mount such as the O.C. White Heavy Duty Wall Mount Base - Black (B&H # OC11426B) which can be placed close the your ceiling to hold the arm. The arm would fit in the mount from the top, rather than upside down. Due to the weight of the arm and mic, they may not be held securely inside the mount if used upside down.
