Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Overview

  • 1Description

A versatile one-lens solution for many shooting situations, the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens is a Canon L-series zoom spanning a useful wide-angle to short-telephoto range and featuring a constant f/4 maximum aperture. Complementing the flexible design is an advanced optical layout that includes one Super UD element, which reduces color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to realize a high degree of color accuracy and clarity. Three aspherical elements are also featured, and minimize distortion and spherical aberrations for improved sharpness. Additionally, a Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to control flare and ghosting for high contrast and neutral color fidelity.

Balancing the refined optics, this 24-105mm f/4 also sports a ring-type USM and internal focusing mechanism to enable quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance, as well as full-time manual focus override. A four-stop-effective Image Stabilizer is also used to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Additionally, this lens is weather-sealed and has a protective fluorine coating on the exposed elements for use in trying environmental conditions.

The product comes supplied in a plain white box, instead of the manufacturer's packaging. It includes all the manufacturer's accessories.

Standard zoom is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 38.4-168mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture maintains consistent illumination throughout the zoom range.
One Super Ultra-Low Dispersion element reduces color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color fidelity.
Three aspherical elements minimize spherical aberrations and distortions for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing design, optimized focusing algorithms, and a high-speed CPU, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Rounded eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.

Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Reviews

EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens (White Box) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 137.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic walk-around lens This zoom lens is fantastically sharp at every focal length. I can discern no distortion or vignetting at all. It has an image quality that rivals or equals that of a prime lens. I use a Hoya polarizing filter on it for many of my landscape shots, and they come out looking amazing. The AF drive on this lens is absolutely silent, and the image stabilization works fantastically well, saving many a handheld shot that would normally be wasted. I only wish that the lens were a bit faster than f/4, but that is a minor complaint and I know that faster lenses increase the pricing exponentially. This is my first L lens and I could not be happier.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Lens I did my homework for months to find this guy, and I'm so glad I purchased it. If I have the option of leaving the house with only one lens... This is it!! It can cover multiple depths and angles weather your shooting landscapes or portraits. It is amazingly quiet and fast as well. You can tell by holding it in your hand how good of quality it is. It's a pretty decent size, so when it is mounted on your camera body, it looks like you mean business. I use it with a 60D and the pictures from it are amazing. If you're looking for 1 good lens for your camera, spend a little extra doe and get this baby, its worth every penny.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Utility Lens I had a Tamron 75th Anniversary 24-135mm f/3.5 Macro that failed on me in the middle of a shoot and needed something fast. Zeiss (my first choice) doesn't make an AF (I don't always trust my eyes) and I couldn't afford the 24-70mm f/2.8, plus I needed the extra focal length, so I settled for the 24-105 f/4. It would be nice if Canon would extend the 'L' series focal length range from 18-105mm as well as a wider aperture - even to 2.8 and add closer focusing. In the absence of that however this is a good workmanlike lens. Well built, with good color reproduction. Cons: I'm not crazy about it in low light; doesn't focus close enough.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must have lens I'm a professional videographer and editor. I shoot with a Canon 7D and the Ef24-105 f/4L is my go to lens. If I had to choose one lens to bring on location, this would be it. I've also used this lens to shoot the majority of a documentary following a band on tour and through the process of recording. It's a great lens to run and gun with, given the wide focal range 24-105mm and the image stabilization. For interiors at night, the f/4 poses some exposure problems, I had to switch out to a lens that was a bit faster than f/4, but for daylight/twilight, exterior/interior shooting, the exposure range is more than ample. The fact that the lens is weather treated is also a great plus, given that I shot in the snow often, and it is usually snowing or raining when I'm out there. All in all, this lens is practical and durable, good work horse for any shooter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nearly prime-lens image quality I recently found myself needing to replace a Canon 35mm f/2.0 I let slip out my hand and crack on the floor. After reading several online reviews I decided to give the 24-105mm (my first zoom) a chance. I'm very glad I did. This lens is wonderful: nearly as sharp as the 35mm, with better color and bokeh -- and several common focal lengths (24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm and 100mm) conveniently accessed through one lens. I also shoot with Canon's 85mm f/1.8 and Sigma's 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM (both wonderful lenses -- highly, highly recommended) and can say the 24-105mm comes close to matching the image quality of these two lenses as well. Canon's 24-105mm is a good choice for nearly prime-lens image quality with the convenience of a zoom.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Walk Around Lens I purchased the White Box USA Version of this lens as a walk around lens and am very happy with the results. Very sharp, easy to take clear images handheld, fast and accurate Focus (No Micro-adjustment needed). Functions on the lens are smooth and have that just right feeling. Some say this lens is better for a full frame camera but I really like the focal range on my 50D, great paring. To be honest in my review I was a little apprehensive about buying the White Box version. I can't explain why but after doing so I would not hesitate to buy another white box lens. These fears were really unfounded. Just as New as a retail box version minus the pretty box, and who needs the box anyways.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp and Fast Nice Upgrade I have had this lens for about a week and what an upgrade from the 28-135 IS UMS i have. Took me some time to make my mind up with this lens or the 24-70 2.8 but i made the right choice with this lens. Extra reach over the 24-70 is nice and my white box lens is sharp as sharp can get.IS is also a nice feature over the 24-70. I have took about 50 or so pics and i am rather impressed by the quailty and craftmanship of this lens. Would buy this lens in a heart beat again and again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very sharp and very versatile I'm a professional wedding photographer who in the past called my 24-70 my workhorse. I purchased the 24-105 after my 24-70 hit the floor and had to be sent out for repair. I had a wedding the next day and quickly realized that not having some kind of backup for my workhorse was not too bright. I did not want the exact same lens so the 24-105 was to be my backup with some new options. After just one wedding I think this is my new work horse. It's sharp, lighter, and I'll gladly give up a stop of light for the extra 35 mm of zoom.

Why is he white box version the same price as the regular version?
    Asked by: John D.
It all depends on the price we get them at. Some White Box items end up cheaper than the regular version, just like Imported or Refurbished items too. But not all of them.

What's the difference between this lens and the II version?
    Asked by: Cody B.
The new, second version of this lens has fewer lens elements and groups, but is notably sharper in tests. It has a rounder 10-blade diaphragm for rounder and smoother bokeh, as well as more improved focusing and image stabilization performance over the original version.

I am interested in 24-105 to use for video with C100 mark II. Cannot decide if I go with this or 24-105mm STM. Constant F4 is not important but important is video quality, smooth & silent autofocus and IS. Suppose if I can afford L series USM lens, what would be the advice?
    Asked by: Kamran
Both the 24-105mm F/4 and 24-105mm STM will give you Image Stabilization. The STM lens, B&H # CA2410535IS, will have the better performance for Autofocus, as that is the specific purpose of STM lenses. However the F4 is an L lens, which is Canon's highest quality of photography lenses. It will give you a better overall image.

White Box merchandise comes supplied in a plain white box, instead of the manufacturer's colorful packaging. It still includes all the manufacturer's accessories and is covered under the 1 Year Warranty.

I own an EOS 80D, for video I've found out the included lens (Canon 18-135mm) in the Video Creator Kit performs wonderfully but for photography, would I gain quality with this Canon 24-105mm F/4?
    Asked by: Rene E.
The included 18-135mm lens in the Video Creator Kit for the 80D is f/3.5-5.6. That means as you zoom in the aperture will stop down. This 24-105mm has a constant aperture of F/4.0. As you zoom in, the aperture will not stop down. Also the 24-105mm is an L Lens. L lenses are Canon's highest quality of glass, so the overall quality will be nicer on this lens than the kit lens.
