The Furman P-2400 IT Symmetrically Balanced Power Conditioner provides premium AC noise reduction by isolating your components 100% from the power grid. This power conditioner features over 80 dB of common-mode and over 50 dB of differential-mode noise reduction for recording, mastering, and broadcast studios, or anywhere noise-free performance is critical.
The toroidal balanced isolation transformer is specifically designed to reduce pickup noise while Furman's revolutionary Series Multi-Stage Protection (SMP) with Extreme Voltage Shutdown (EVS) circuits, and Linear Filtering Technology (LiFT) protects your equipment.

Works great with a little help from its friends

I use this in a home theater setup. It does a great job filtering out grunge in the house AC, and I feel secure in its ability to protect my system even from repeated damaging surges and spikes. Silent passages in the music seem more silent, nuance seems more detailed. Individual voices are better focused and placed more precisely front to back as well as laterally. However, it needs help dealing with noise that digital devices it's protecting put back into the AC; the ground lift switch didn't help. Plugging an Audioprism Quietline into one of the protected outlets, and grounding components that have grounding screws with a separate wire to a protected outlet fixed that problem. I recommend checking results with an Audioprism Noise Sniffer. A set of feet would be nice for those of us who don't want to mount it in a rack. Hockey pucks with double-stick tape on them work well; this thing is heavy!

On the reverse of the unit, what characteristics and functionality distinguishes the two black outlets (from the standard orange ones)?

With regards to the Furman p-2400 IT, the orange outlets are transformer isolated, providing the highest level of filtration of noise. The black outlets are Ground Fault (GFCI) protected outlets put on the P-2400 IT as a safety mechanism. The Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) on the P-2400 ITs rear panel is a special kind of circuit breaker that detects an imbalancein the current flowing into the two hot legs. The missing current is presumed to be flowing through the ground conductor (the roundpin on an AC outlet).Ground current often indicates a dangerous partial or full short circuit. If an imbalance is detected, the GFCI trips and cuts off powernot only to itself, but to all the P-2400 IT outlets.

The Furman P-2400 IT does not offer power regulation. For both voltage regulation and power conditioning, you may consider the Furman P-3600 AR G.

On the front face of the Furman P-2400 IT, are the two electrical outlets consistent with the black outlets on the back of the unit, or with the orange outlets on the back of the unit?

On the Furman P-2400 IT, the two electrical outlets on the front are balanced just as the ones in the back. They also pertain to the B bank.
