Panasonic 14-45mm f/3.5-5.6 overview

  • 1Description

A versatile zoom spanning wide-angle to portrait-length perspectives, the Lumix G Vario 14-45mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH. MEGA O.I.S. from Panasonic is a 28-90mm equivalent lens for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras. Well-suited for most general shooting applications, this lens employs one aspherical element to help reduce the overall size and weight of the lens, and this element also works to control distortion and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range for improved sharpness. Individual elements have also been multi-coated to suppress lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color accuracy in a variety of lighting conditions. Additionally, a MEGA O.I.S. system is featured, which compensates for camera shake to better enable shooting handheld in low-light environments.

Standard zoom is designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras and provides a 28-90mm equivalent focal length range.
One aspherical element controls spherical aberrations and distortion throughout the zoom range for improved sharpness and more accurate rendering.
Individual elements have been multi-coated to effectively reduce lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast when working in strong lighting conditions.
Autofocus motor supports camera's contrast detection for precise focusing performance. AF can also be manually overridden for more fine-tuned control.
MEGA Optical Image Stabilizer minimizes the appearance of camera shake to benefit handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions.

    Panasonic 14-45mm f/3.5-5.6 reviews

    Lumix G Vario 14-45mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH. MEGA O.I.S. Lens is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 93.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Should be the kit lens My GX-1 came with the now-ubiquitous 14-42 which, upon testing, proved to be good but not excellent. I finally broke down and got the 14-45 at twice the price, which is superior in sharpness, color rendition, fringing, etc. It's only a little bit (8%-9%) better, but it make all the difference. I should have just bought the body and lens separately. I don't see why any manufacturer would supply a kit lens that is not up to the level of the sensor in the camera, but it seems to be the norm these days. Remember when the 50mm lens that came standard on film cameras was often one of the sharpest available?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Image Quality I have used the Olympus 14-42mm (Mk 1) M Zuiko, the Panasonic 14-42mm, and this lens on my EPL1 and G2 cameras. By far the 14-45mm has the best contrast, sharpness (especially edge to edge), and clarity of distant objects at all aperture settings of all three lenses. The OIS is very effective also. Pros: Excellent sharpness, contrast, clarity, edge sharpness at all apertures. OIS has actual on/off switch on lens, not in software. Nice, small size. Cons: Minimum focus distance is longer than the Oly kit lens, so not good for macro-type work Color balance tends more (slightly) to the bluer end of the spectrum than the Oly or other Panasonic kit lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very nice lens I purchased the lens as a replacement for rather disappointing Olympus E-PL1 kit lens (14-42/3.5-5.6) and did not regret it. AF is much faster and much more silent compared to Olympus 14-42 lens. The lens resolution is excellent especially fully zoomed in, where (at 42mm) Olympus lens performance is really poor. Built-in stabilization is somewhat better than Olympus in-body stabilization. Build quality is solid, as expected from Panasonic/Leica. The only reason I give it 4 stars is relatively small maximum aperture (3.5-5.6). If the lens was at least half stop faster, it would be the perfect allround zoom lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Standard Micro 4/3 Zoom I can hardly fault this lens. Its sharp except in the very corners where there is a hint of softness wide open. It focuses fast and accurately, the colours are pleasant, CA is there but is a small fraction of what you would expect to see, the micro-contrast is excellent and there macro contrast has a good balance. For the price point, this lens represents excellent value for money. Compared to the Olympus 14-42 11 R which I owned briefly, there is no comparison. Both lenses tested on an Olympus Pen E-PM2

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great lens with a better alternative I purchased this lens to go with an Olympus E-M10 II, and it was an excellent lens with high-quality optics for the price. However, I ended up returning it and picking up the Panasonic Lumix G Vario 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 II (note the II in the model name!), which is smaller, lighter, less expensive, and in my (limited) experience, has comparable image quality. If that alternative didn't exist, I would have given this lens 5 stars for its image quality, but I gave it 4 to reflect the existence of what I think is a superior alternative. NOTE: you'll see many comparisons between this 14-45mm lens and the original Panasonic 14-42mm lens, which I have not tried. From my reading, the 14-45mm lens is superior to that model, but not to its successor (the mark II version).

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Viable within its limitations I tested with Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. The OIS worked well because it has the switch on the camera for compatibility. The issues were some slight distortion on edges. The lens isn't fast and it's not constant aperture so on the Telephoto end it's only f5.6 which is slow. It's OK for a budget lens but i finally opted for the 12-35 f2.8 constant aperture lens for what I needed. Don't get me wrong, it's a decent budget kit lens. It's fairly small and light as well. It's not the lens if you're a professional with demanding clients.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Bring life closer I originally bought my Lumix GF-1 with the 24MM Pancake lens and found myself missing zoom from the old point and shoot cameras that I was used to. Although I still recommend buying the camera with the small pancake lens, I do love having a little more control over the framing when I take the picture. Lightweight and easy to switch out. The only negative is that the lens doesn't provide the amount of zoom I expected. If you are coming from a compact camera with 10X zoom or something, it might be a little shock, but the quality is the positive tradeoff. Just an issue getting used to changeable lenses. Guess I am now in for more holiday presents :-)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definitely nicer than the G Vario 14-42m I wanted to upgrade my Lumix G Vario 14-42mm and honestly my choices were limited. I could wait for the Lumix G X Vario PZ 14-42 mm, but wasn't sure about power zoom only and limited hoods. The M. Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm rated well but didn't have image stabilization. That left me with the Lumix G Vario 14-45mm. I have to tell you that the rating charts were correct. This lens is cleaner around the edges than the G Vario 14-42mm. in addition, it is slightly smaller, and I love the external O.I.S. switch. Even the focus seems more exact, but I have no idea why. All I know is that this is a nice improvement from my G Vario 14-42mm that came with my G3 and I am getting some great shots. I also have the Leica DG Macro-Elmarit 45mm F2.8 and the 45-200mm f/4-5.6 G Vario.
