Manfrotto 504HD overview

  • 1Description

The Manfrotto 504HD Fluid Video Head introduces a revolutionary new design that improves performance while reducing weight, as well as offering a soupçon of style. The head's patented Bridging Technology allows for a wider top plate and longer sliding plate that add stability and balance to a set of state-of-the-art professional features. With its ability to support up to 16.5 lbs, the 504HD can be used with a variety of video and photo cameras. The newly designed counterbalance system includes four presets--from 0 to 16.5 lbs--enabling proper balance no matter what the camera's size or weight.

At the same time, redesigned variable friction components--with clearly marked degree scales and vibration-free movement--bring new levels of fine tuning to your tilts and pans. An illuminated leveling bubble keeps horizons from tilting, even in the dark, while independent disc-brake locks make sure the head stays secure when at rest.

Whether you're using a pro camcorder or a highly accessorized video DSLR on a rod/rail system, the 504HD takes some of the strain off your support rig by providing two 3/8" threads integrated into the sides of the top plate. These Easy Link Connectors allow attachment of monitors, arms, and other accessories directly to the head, making the camera less top-heavy while reducing setup time. All while being oh-so-stylish!

    Manfrotto 504HD reviews

504HD Fluid Video Head is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 99.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Grinding noise and feel on tilt and pan. I liked the head and was disappointed to see there was an audible and you could feel a grinding noise on pan and tilt. I sent the original one back to B&H for a replacement as recommended by Manfrotto. The second one is just as bad. I recorded the loud sound and was told they would check other units they had to see if this was normal. Aparantly they say this is normal. I'm stunned this is the case. They said all the units they tested had this grinding noise and feel. I can't believe it as I've always had quality products from manfrotto. Would love to know if B&H can chime in to see if this is indeed normal for the product or if I just had bad luck twice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice tripod head Beautiful smooth movement in this tripod head. Easily adjustable for various weighted cameras, and easy to use. I use it mostly for shooting with a Canon 5DMk2 and also slightly smaller video recorders, with a Beachtek XLR adapter, and the weighting is perfect for this with the counterweighting set at minimum. I liked it so much, when I had my first one of these stolen, I replaced it with exactly the same tripod head. Goes great on the carbon legs Manfrotto 535 Fairly heavy, but great quality and will last forever. Better suited to heavier cameras - counterweighting may be a bit much for really light cameras eg small camcorders.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Fluid Head at Reasonable Price As a video journalist and one man band, I need a head that is full functioned, light, yet stable and this head fills those requirements. I bought this head because I found that the tilt controls for the Manfrotto 502 head I had been using were difficult to operate and caused camera shake when I moved from a stable shot. The 504HD solves this problem, because it has a tilt release lever on the left side of the head, where it belongs. It also has great controls for balancing the camera and a useful lighted level. The only drawback I found with this head is that it has increased the weight of my gear by about three pounds, which is to be expected. There is always a trade-off.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid Head I had a Manfrotto 502HD and I moved up to the 504HD because my gear was exceeding the weight limits of my old trusty 502. If you are familiar with the 502HD than the 504HD should be instantly familiar. The lighted level is nice and the resistance allows you to get very nice pans and tilts with a DSLR rig outfitted with a number of accessories. The only thing that is a little weird is that the pan resistance nob is under the bridge at the center of the head. I have small hands and it is a tight somewhat unnatural fit, even for me. That being said, you can still get great resistance and flow from the head and for the performance you get for the price there is nothing that comes close.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from No drag scale on adjustment knobs. Uses 3/8 reducer. The quick release plate is not the one shown in photos. This comes with one that doesn't accept 3/8 screws, instead, they send a reducer. It also does not have the numbered drag scale shown. I returned the first one I received because the drag was crazy loose. The second one I received is very smooth, and I am keeping it, rather than trying again for another brand over the lack if number scale and quick release plate differences and I don't have time to wait for a replacement again. In the future, I will think twice about manfrotto because although I did receive one that WORKS great, I had to return the first, and the features are not as advertised.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really nice head This head is a really solid head. With 9 steps of resistance for pan and tilt it gives a good amount of versatility. A little big and heavy for my liking but oh well. Solid build quality. The counterbalance works fairly well but isn't perfect. A little bit of kickback still depending on where your plate is slide to. Even with a quality head like this it's still hard to get real smooth pans with my 300mm lens zoomed all the way out. There's still some minor jerks and changes in pace. If your looking for a quick release that adapts to this plate get the 577. B&H recommended the 357 but it's the wrong one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best fluid video head under $ I had access to this video head and the carbon legs for about a year and a half, and when I moved on, I couldn't live without it, so I purchased the video head for my tripod legs. Very adjustable head with solid fluid action - good enough to pull off cinematic panning, tilting, and diagonal moves. Backlit bubble level is convenient on darker sets and live venues. Tripod plate allows for sufficient adjustment My only wish is for an even longer tripod plate for balancing the occasional long DSLR rig. Counterbalance system is good, and there is enough spring tension for most DSLR rigs built to go on sticks.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good for the money... I use the 504HD head with a DSLR Canon Mark II & a JVC790 video setup. The counterbalance system is a great help for the different weights of the two cameras. For still photography, the system works well for lockdown shots. As for video, tracking a moving shot is fine until the subject stops. I find I must hold the shot steady or I get slight movement as I bring the shot to a stop while continuing to shoot. My Vinten Vision 6 system is far superior in this instance, but at a much greater cost for the tripod. I got the 504HD as a location, run and gun system.
