Shure PGXD24/SM58 Overview

The Shure PGXD24/SM58 is a wireless handheld microphone system offering high-quality 24-bit / 48 kHz digital audio in a cost-effective, reliable package that's easy to use. The lightweight tabletop receiver is highly portable, making it an excellent fit for on-the-go presenters, lecturers, performers, and DJs working in small venues—including weddings, houses of worship, classrooms, offices, and conference spaces.

PGX-D Digital systems operate in the 900 MHz band, far away from potential TV and cell phone interference. The receiver offers true digital diversity, using two antennas and two independent receiver circuits to ensure reliable transmission at a maximum line-of-sight range of up to 200'.

Operation is simple. Press the Scan button, and the receiver scans for a clean frequency. Press the Sync button, and the receiver and transmitter lock to the same channel via infrared ports. That's it, you're up and running. If the RF environment changes and interference is heard, simply rescan and resync to operate on a new clean frequency.

This configuration comes with a handheld transmitter featuring an interchangeable SM58 dynamic mic capsule with a cardioid pickup pattern. The transmitter runs for up to 9 hours on two AA batteries. Up to 5 wireless mics can operate simultaneously in the same space.

I got this unit to replace an aging BLX Shure unit from 15 years prior. Plug and play with the digital system -- i have two other Shure laveliers on the with their own digital channels and everything worked wonderfully for our graduation event with over 1000 people. I do appreciate these run on AA batteries which are easier to have on hand than the old 9v ones. The SM58 head is simply great.

These mics are great. This was our third replacement for old PGX2 analog mics. The sound is great and being digital, the batteries last much longer than the old analog versions.

I love it

Will the PGXD24 receiver generate static when the microphone is turned off?
Asked by: Bruce
The PGXD4 receiver in the Shure PGXD24/SM58 Digital Wireless Handheld Microphone System with SM58 Capsule should not typically generate noise when not paired with the microphone transmitter. However, as it works on open channels, if left on while unpaired, the receiver could pick up RF from the surrounding area, which could manifest as audio signal.

question

I have a PGXD4 receiver connected with an SM58 on a J frequency, can I connect two SM58 microphones over the same channel to my receiver? Will this cause interference? If so, do I need to buy a microphone in the same frequency? Thank you
Asked by: Hector P.
No. This works exactly like AM/FM radio stations. A single transmitter can have multiple receivers. But it is not possible to have multiple stations/transmitters operating on a single frequency.

question

What kind of range can be expected from this mic? Are external antennas available? My application is odd - a rural community cemetery, no RF congestion, 5 acres or so. We are building a structure at one corner, but there is a tradition to dedicate graves. Wondering if this can be done while elderly people assembled can remain in the building, yet hear speaker at graveside.
Asked by: Danny
As this system transmits in 900MHz, so RF interference would be unlikely, however the PGXD4 receiver does not have a remote antenna option so it is limited to a range of up to 200 feet (provided there are no physical obstructions preventing a clear signal). A square 5 acre plot is roughly 466ft x 466ft, with each acre at 208ft square already exceeding the maximum range of this system, even under optimal conditions. If you would like to consider another Shure wireless option, we would recommend using a BLX24R/SM58 BNC-connected to a coaxial cable (+/- any necessary signal amplifiers depending on the cable run length) running to a centrally located omnidirectional antenna mounted on a stand placed in the field.
