Vello RW-C1 overview

  • 1Description

Whether capturing images in the studio or on location, the Vello FreeWave Wireless Remote Shutter Release adds flexibility and versatility to your shooting style. Photography unplugged - shooters can interact with a model, view the scene or set from alternate angles, or set a camera by a stream to capture an image of a bear hunting while you remain at a safe distance away - all this and more without missing a beat, a shot, or a moment. This particular FreeWave unit is compatible with cameras with a sub-mini connection, i.e. Canon EOS Rebel series, 60D, 70D, PowerShot G15 and G1 X, Contax N and 645, Hasselblad H, Pentax K and DS, Sigma SD and Samsung GX series cameras.

This versatile shutter release features Smart Code technology which allows it to be configured to operate on up to 16 million possible radio channels. You can easily switch channels to "zero in" on a frequency that provides optimal range and functionality.

The FreeWave operates with radio frequency (RF) technology, therefore a direct line of sight is not necessary; radio waves pass through objects such as windows and walls. It is unlike other wireless remotes on the market that operate on an Infrared (IR) system and require a direct line of sight between transmitter and receiver to make things work.

Since touching the camera even lightly while capturing an image can create a blurred image, the FreeWave eliminates this by tripping the shutter without any disturbances. This is critical when photographing subjects close up, and for long-exposures and macros. It is also extremely valuable when photographing nature, wildlife and other subjects that are difficult for you to get close to.

Smart Code
The FreeWave's Smart Code feature allows you to operate on 16,000,000 possible radio channels. No DIP switches need to be set, and one transmitter can trigger multiple receivers. The units have been synchronized at the factory, so your system can work right out of the box. However, to maximize signal quality and range, it is best to use the Smart Code technology to sense the "quiet" frequencies in your environment and re-synchronize on that channel.
Extended Range
The FreeWave can fire the camera's shutter from distances up to 320 feet (100 meters).
Multi-function
Trigger your camera wirelessly or wired. Wired triggering even works if the receiver battery is dead or missing.
Dual-Function Release
Press the transmitter's button half way to focus; press it fully to trigger the shutter.
Delayed Release
The two-second delay function gives you extra time to get into position.
Multi-exposure
You can take multiple shots with one press of the trigger.
Long Exposures
With the FreeWave you can control the length of the exposure remotely.
LED Indicators
Two LED indicators confirm pre-focus and exposure when in the wireless mode.
Versatile
The FreeWave includes a camera release cable that works with your particular camera model. By simply changing to another cable (additional purchase required) a single receiver can work with many other cameras as well.

    Vello RW-C1 reviews

FreeWave Wireless Remote Shutter Release (Canon Sub-Mini Connection) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 313.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Excellent remote I enjoy using this remote, it has a good distance range and it allows you to zoom in with the remote, take multiple pictures, have a 2-sec delay, or continuous pictures. I had to buy a separate cable to connect to my Canon 7D, but it was only a few dollars more. The only caveat about this remote is that while the receiver fits nicely on top of my camera when I'm not using flash, with the flash, it kind of had to hang from the camera, which is uncomfortable. Also, the cable fits in, but it doesn't feel like it fits in all that snug- I had one instance where I thought it might not be working, but it turned out that it just didn't stay connected to the camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than advertized This device worked in ways I did not expect. I use it on my Canon 20D (three pin connect with additional connect wire) and my new Canon G12. The instruction manual is complete and even illustrated. One does not always need wireless and this provides for wired remote as well as wireless. It is small and although made of plastic seems durable. As with most cameras with a hot shoe, the internal flash is not usable when this is inserted into the flash mount on the camera. Also bracketing is disabled. The receiver is light enough to use Velcro to attach it to a tripod leg. This has solved all the Lack of remote problems I have had in the past.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from works well I use this remote for self portraits with a Canon DSLR Rebel XS, and so far it has worked well. With the antenna extended the range is great and the firing is consistent. I also like that other cords can extend the remote to other cameras if I ever choose to upgrade. I have had a problem (maybe one or two time in the 3 weeks I've used it) with jamming where the receiver continues firing and won't stop. The problem is easily fixed by turning the device off and on again. A mere annoyance for me since I am using it at close range, but I could see it as a bigger problem for someone using the remote at a greater distance from their camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Would definitely buy again if dumb enough to lose another ! I have used this product for the past 2 years as a remote trigger for personal holiday photos of my wife and myself and also use it constantly for macro shots. On a recent holiday I lost the actual remote which rendered the unit useless which is why I have ordered another one. It is a great, reliable and very effective photography tool with numerous uses including portrait photography. It is well priced and as an international purchaser find it still worthwhile with freight costs and an extremely fast & reliable delivery on all occasions that I have purchased from B&H in the past as well! Wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone else.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from VELLO SUPPORT EXCELLENT I previously reviewed this product with a single star as the transmitter was constructed poorly. B&H noted the review, passed on to VELLO which I am pleased to say stood behind their product and replaced it. Upon receiving it I opened the transmitter to see if it had the same issue as the first one had and it does not...I am happy to report that this replacement has a saddle for the battery to set in...thus my first one must have been some anomaly of the production line. I am happy to report that it functions fine and I would recommend this unit if you want an inexpensive remote shutter control...Thanks again to B&H and VELLO for great customer service

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good product! I use this mainly for wildlife, telephoto use on a tripod. Even if your camera is on a tripod, you can still get camera shake by pushing the shutter button on your camera. I will be trying this remote with my other lens also. This remote eliminates any reason to touch your camera until you are ready to aim your camera in a different direction. The best part is you do not have to sit with your camera to have the remote work. The furthest away I have been from my camera has been about 60 ft and the remote worked perfectly. The unit was easy to use by just following the simple directions included with the remote.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best wireless remote for your money! I use the wireless remote shutter for self-portraits, family photos that I want to be a part of and pictures where the absolute minimum camera shake is a must. It is also handy when you want to interact more with your subject...for example children, you're more likely to get a natural expression from them if you can interact face to face rather than while your camera is pressed up to your face. This way you can step away from the camera, have a chat, and when the moments right, snap away. I prefer this shutter over others because you are not limited to where you stand in order for the signal to be received. Most shutters require the photographer to be in front of the camera which may not be ideal if you are setting up a timed exposure of the night sky for example, and you want to sit in your car instead of out in the cold during say, a 10 minute exposure of the stars in motion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Like A Million Bucks!I I've used it some for architecture, portraits, etc. The half press on the shutter release sure works good -- focuses great and then all the way for the shot.-- Fiji X-E2 works flawlessly with it. Only problem I had was stupid on my part. i didn't notice the battery for the receiver was plastic shrink wrapped. Put it together and it didn't work. Looking closely, I did find the plastic on the battery, took it off and it has worked great ever since! First time I've ever used a wireless shutter release and this one works great. Reasonable price!
