Venus Optics Laowa 35mm f/2.8 Zero-D Tilt-Shi... Overview

With advanced perspective and focus control, the Venus Optics Laowa 35mm f/2.8 is a wide tilt-shift macro lens designed for architectural, macro, and tabletop photographers. With a minimum focusing distance of 9" and 0.5x maximum magnification, it provides the flexibility needed to capture stunning and precise images.
Wide Tilt-Shift Lens
Offers ±10° of tilt and ±8mm of shift to correct perspective distortion and manipulate focus while a 35mm focal length captures a wide perspective, ideal for immersive architectural and tabletop shots. The tilt function can create either an expansive, sharp-to-the-horizon focus or a narrow, selective focus for a "miniature" effect. The shift function can be used to correct perspective and take multiple photos for panoramic stitching. The lens is also able to rotate 360° in 15° clicking increments.
Macro Functionality
Thanks to the minimum focusing distance of 9" and a 0.5x magnification rate, this lens is perfect for product and macro photography. Choose exactly what you want to have in focus thanks to the ±10° tilt functionality.

As part of the Zero-D series, this lens has an optical design that renders subjects with minimal distortion in order to suit architectural, interior, and landscape applications. A water-repellent "frog eye" coating also protects the front lens element from water droplets and moisture.

Venus Optics Laowa 35mm f/2.8 Zero-D Tilt-Shi... Reviews

Good lens, with some limitations.

I've had a few days to test this lens doing urban landscape work, on a Fuji GFX 100 megapixel body. Always on a tripod. My points of comparison are the various Fuji native lenses, and a Pentax 645 35mm lens mounted with a tilt/shift adapter. Compared with the adapted Pentax (a design from the 1980s or 90s) the Laowa doesn't bring any sharpness improvement. Results are almost identical. This is a bit disappointing, considering that we're working with a modern design from 30 years later, and that the Pentax actually has a larger image circle. However, the Laowa has significantly less distortion, which presents as simple barrel distortion and is relatively easy to fix. The Pentax shows the complex mustache-shaped distortion typical of retrofocus lenses from its era. The Laowa is not "zero distortion," as the marketing department suggests, but it's a significant improvement. The Laowa also has significantly less chromatic aberration, especially in the shifted corners. It's got plenty, but I find that LightRoom's standard setting is all that's needed to remove it. The Pentax sometimes needed a real manual working over to get rid of lateral color. Mechanically, the Laowa is much more solidly made than the old Pentax. This is a pro and a con; all the mechanical bits feel great, but the lens weighs as much a piece of WW2 military surplus. And it's over twice the size of the Pentax. Not super fun to haul around. The design of the tilt/shift mechanism is better than the one on my adapter. Probably better than any adapter. But still it's only ok. The knobs are awkward to use, and the rack-and-pinion gearing isn't strong enough to effectively move this heavy lens. It would have been much smarter to use a worm gear, like Schneider did on its first generation shift lenses. This is just lazy engineering. It means you mostly move the lens by manually lifting it with one hand, and locking down the lock knob with the other. It works but is inelegant. How is this lens compared to native Fujifilm lenses? Not as good. You won't see a difference unless you're printing very big (I'd estimate at least 40" wide) but it's clear onscreen. Fuji's own t/s 30mm lens is a state-of-the-art optic and would beat this lens in every way. But it costs over 3.5 times as much, and it's not in a focal length that works for me. If Fuji made one in 35mm or 40mm, I'd sell a kidney and get it. I have no feedback on the macro abilities (not useful to me) or wide-open performance (likewise). I'd prefer if they gave up on the fast aperture and close focusing, and put their engineering capital into making it a great lens for how serious people will actually use it. Nevertheless, if you need a 35mm tilt shift lens, it's probably the best thing on the market right now. It can produce great results if you use it with a good enough camera and good enough technique.
