Photek SoftLighter 60" Overview

An umbrella that can be quickly transformed into a softbox, the 60" SoftLighter Umbrella with Removable 7mm and 8mm Shafts from Photek is built on a redesigned classic umbrella with a fiberglass frame and white reflective fabric that is free from contaminates that might add an unwanted color cast to your light output. The unique modifier includes a diffuser that fits tightly over the open side of the umbrella and accepts flash heads 7.25" or less in diameter - instant softbox! The combination of the light bouncing off the umbrella and through the diffuser yields a soft, flattering quality of light and since closer is softer, a portion of the shaft is removable so that you can work closer to your subject.

The SoftLighter's 10 panel construction (instead of the usual 8) gives the fabric tighter support that results in more controllable output and refined circular catchlights in the eyes of your subjects. The umbrella's black backing is removable allowing you to shoot through the translucent white fabric for snappier contrast. This SoftLighter umbrella ships with a removable 7mm shaft for lights that require it, but an 8mm shaft is also included to give options to the user.

Super tight fabric ribbing around light

Like the umbrella but the ribbed neck, to go around the light, is way too tight and I struggled to get around my lights ( photogenic). I am also used to Larson soft boxes so the cover was cheaper than I expected. But the quality of light is nice in the end.

I love this thin profile umbrella its perfect for low ceilings and creates beautiful light. My only challenge was the diffuser sock was too thin to fit my alien b's square strobe, so I used a different brand diffuser that I had on hand. If you are using a thinner strobe it will fit. Otherwise be prepared. The sock would not stretch to fit.

How do you put this on a Photoflex StarFlash 300?
Asked by: Ann
The Photek Softlighter would insert into the umbrella slot just above the stand mount of the Photoflex StarFlash 300 and the included sock would fit over the reflector.

Will this work with an Elinchrom Style RX ...

Will this work with an Elinchrom Style RX monolight? I read an old review from 2004 saying the shaft is actually less than 7 mm and does not stay secure in the Elinchrom 7 mm shaft tube. Maybe this newer version has addressed that issue. Anyone have experience using this umbrella with Elinchrom?
Asked by: Mark
The Elinchrom Style RX monolights have a 7mm slot on just below the flash tube and an 8mm adapter where the stand adapter and the light would meet. That being said, this Photek Softlighter Umbrella with the 7mm and 8mm shafts is compatible.

Which diffuser set up is needed to use the Softlighter with a Godox AD200?
Asked by: Linda
Hey I have one for my profoto B1 and my buddy has one for his alien bees. I’m pretty certain all sizes are just diameter of umbrellas and mine came with two different size poles to screw in so they are universal for all lights. Long as your light has a hole for a umbrella - Id say just make sure you it comes with the 7mm and 8mm pole.

How come this umbrella has 8mm and 7mm shafts while another Photek at the same size only has the 8mm shaft? I understand the shaft can be removed after the umbrella is set-up, but just don't understand why there are 2 sizes?
Asked by: Dan
On a Profoto ProHead, you really have to push hard to jam the 8mm shaft into the spring-loaded receiver on the light - I have broken the glass dome on a head more than once when doing this. I recommend the 7mm shaft if you're using Profoto.
