Arca-Swiss Z1 dp with Quick Release Overview

The Arca Swiss Monoball Z1 dp Ball Head builds on the success and popularity of their Z-series ball heads. Z-Series ball heads are just as elegant, and even more perfect. The size and weight of the ball heads have been significantly reduced. The ball and fastening are now assembled using a patented bayonet mount. Various accessories can thus be quickly mounted to adapt the tripod as required. This quick release version requires separate purchase of an Arca or Arca-type camera plate.

In addition to the proven, patented Arca-Swiss features, including aspherical ball heads, axial clamping and PMF (progressive motion related friction control), the Z-Series also boasts new technical developments and optimized materials and coatings. The Z-series can withstand an incredible 130 lb (59 kg) off-axis.

This model is the "dp" version, which features double panning. This means that besides for the standard pan base at the bottom of the head you also get a second panning mechanism below the camera mount. It can keep the camera perfectly vertical to the swinging plane, and is ideal for perfect panoramic stitching.

Ever since their introduction over forty years ago, the Arca Swiss Monoballs have been at the forefront of quality and performance. Today, their unique shape (an ellipse rather than a sphere) is still what separates them from all others. With other ballheads, no matter how good the tension modulation, you invariably will need to increase the tension control as you move the load away from the center. This is because gravity has a greater effect on gear when not perfectly level.

The Arca Swiss Monoball eliminates the need to modulate the tension, because its elliptical nature corrects it by virtue of its own design. The load stays exactly where you tell it to once it's locked into position. A separate control is set to apply a constant minimum friction, which allows the photographer the peace of mind that comes with knowing that his gear will never move of its own volition. The heavier the equipment, the more the advantages of the Arca Swiss become evident
A tension adjustment thumb-dial is built into the indexed friction control knob
The ball head includes the "Arca" style quick release system for quick mounting and dismounting of cameras. Separate purchase of a camera plate is required
Base diameter of 2.7" (69mm), excluding knobs

Arca-Swiss Z1 dp with Quick Release Reviews

Absolute rock solid ball head

I bought this ball head for holding a 40cm rail, which I use to attach my medium format camera and several other smaller cameras at the same time. My rail cameras likely weigh 15lbs - and a lot of the weight is distributed far from the center. This ball head is reassuringly heavy and when you tighten up the friction control, it doesn't creep at all. There is also no discernible play/wobble/slack - the quality you'd expect for an Arca-Swiss branded ball head.

Fantastic ball head

I agonized over which ball head to order after doing way too much research. I saw the Arca Swiss recommended online, and after my first big shoot with it, it was a great purchase. I've used another well known brand's ball head in the past, but didn't like how the camera could easily flop over when loosening the ball. The Arca Swiss maintains some tension due to the egg-shaped design and is very smooth to operate. The hard part was deciding whether to go with the lever-type quick release system or this one's screw quick release. While I tend to like lever quick releases, the lever on the Arca Swiss looked a little bit too cumbersome to use with too many safety catches to wrangle. The screw type on this one looks to be reliable and will work with a bigger variety of plates without needing adjustment, and it doesn't take many turns of the knob to lock it down. The other hard decision was deciding whether to pay the extra money for the double pan option on this dp version. I'm glad I did because on my first shoot it proved to be a big time saver when framing shots. You don't have to shoot panoramas to get a benefit out of the extra panning. It's nice once you have it leveled to make an an adjustment to pan quickly. If you're getting paid to make photos, saving time is critical, and the extra pan helps out quite a bit in my opinion. I thought it might make the ball head more unwieldy having the extra pan option, but it's pretty unobtrusive. Yes, this is more expensive than some other options out there, but I hate going too cheap and having to re-buy stuff that isn't working. This Arca Swiss I believe will last a long time.

question

hi,is there a clamp with a escale engraved on it?
Asked by: Anonymous
There aren't any clamps with scales engraved on them. However, there are many Arca-compatible panoramic rails with degrees engraved on them that you could use, such as the Sunwayfoto DPG-3016 Stereography Rail: http://bhpho.to/1cUTch9

The Arca Swiss ball head Z1 DP. The picture of the pano head on the B&H website shows the degree markings with numerals every 15 degrees and 5 degree "tick" marks - such as, 0..15..30..45 etc. I have viewed the Arca Swiss web site in Germany and they refer to a Z1+ version of this ballhead and the pano degree markings are every 5 degrees with a "tick" mark with NO degree numerals, such as - ........... So my question, is the photo on the B&H website correct with degree markings on the pano head , 0..15..30..45..60, etc correct??

question

Does this head come with a quick release plate? If not, which plate should I buy? I own Nikon D800.
Asked by: Anonymous
A quick release plate is not included. For the D800 I recommend the Arca-Swiss Universal Quick Release Plate with 1/4 Screw (40mm) and Rubber Surface. http://bhpho.to/9g0L6O

What's the difference between this model and the flip lock version? What is more sturdy?
Asked by: Marika
The difference is this one has a knob that you would turn to lock and unlock the clamp versus the flip lock on the other version. There really isn't one better than the other. It is mostly personal preference.

is this head compatible with bogey 3021 tripod
Asked by: mark b.
It accepts a standard 1/4in male tripod thread on the bottom (the smaller size), if your tripod has the larger 3/8in thread size you will need some sort of adapter

question

Hello, I am wondering if the scale ring is fixed with main knob or it is rotatable separately from the main knob? My product has this situation, I don't know if its the manufactural problem
Asked by: Shaoyi Z.
The scale ring on my Z1 ball control knob rotates with the ball control knob. The scale ring can be rotated relative to the control knob. This behavior is probably to allow the ring to be calibrated to 0 at its loosest setting for use with light equipment or to 12 at its tightest setting for use with heavy equipment. This is only an assumption on my part and may be incorrect. The remaining two large diameter scales on the base and above the ball are fixed relative to their associated small control levers.
