Leica SL3 Overview

High Performance Optimization
Coupling a powerful 60MP full-frame BSI CMOS sensor with the Maestro IV image processor, the Leica SL3 promises swift focusing performance and excellent image quality with 15 stops of dynamic range and 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization. Improvements to the camera body include a 3.2" 2.3m-dot tilting touchscreen LCD for dynamic viewing options while capturing imagery, a CFexpress Type B slot and SD UHS-II slot for file-saving versatility, and a reduced weight of 1.7 pounds. Also noteworthy is the SL3's hybrid autofocusing system, which integrates Phase Detection AF with Contrast Detection AF and Object Detection AF, resulting in reliable performance in a multitude of shooting scenarios. These critical improvements to the camera's hardware and body have positioned this iteration to leap ahead of its predecessors.
60MP Full-Frame BSI CMOS Sensor and Maestro IV Processor
At the front and center of the SL3's notable upgrades are its 60MP full-frame BSI CMOS sensor and Maestro IV image processor. This duo combined with 8GB of buffer memory allows for incredible capturing speeds as well as superb image quality. This is double the amount of buffer memory available in the SL2-S, which means you'll experience noticeable speed improvements for all operations, including startup time. Additionally, this improved processor provides a wide ISO sensitivity range from 50-100000.
Triple Resolution Technology
Choose between 60, 36, or 18MP output while still utilizing the full sensor area with Leica's Triple Resolution Technology. This unique pixel binning process allows you to capture DNG and JPEG files at smaller sizes while still benefiting from the sensor's rich 14-bit color depth and 15-stops of dynamic range.
Hybrid AF System with PDAF
Utilizing a hybrid AF system for optimized focusing, the SL3 features Phase Detection AF with Object Detection AF and Contrast Detection AF, ensuring speedy shifts in focus as well as reliable performance in low light scenarios. With this improved focusing system, the camera tracks eyes, faces, bodies, and animals much more effectively.
8K Video Recording & ProRes 1080p
Take full advantage of the SL3 with its impressive video capturing capabilities. All video resolutions, including 8K, frame rates, and quality settings can be recorded internally or externally without limit.

ProRes 422 HQ recording can be done with Full HD resolution at frame rates up to 60p.

HDMI 2.1 Type A and USB-C ports provide greater access to accessories like external recorders, gimbals, and power banks, making the SL3 a great tool for video creation.

5-Axis Image Stabilization
Complementing this camera's powerful sensor is a 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization system that provides up to 5-stops of shake reduction, allowing you to capture sharper handheld images.
Body Design Updates & Additional Features
  • One CFexpress Type B slot and one SD UHS-II slot are available for added versatility for file saving, allowing you to separate JPEG and raw files to different cards or save duplicate files to each card.

Leica SL3 Reviews

Amazing Mirrorless camera

By Adam
Rated 5 out of 5

I have been a canon user for many years and after looking at canon mirrorless cameras I was unimpressed with their performance. So I needed to find an alternative camera system. I am super happy with the Leica cameras. The images out of the camera are amazing and need little editing. The camera performs fantastically. the image size is quite large, but you can switch to a smaller setting and have it work just as well. I recently cropped a full res image from a horizontal shot to a vertical print with no quality or sharpness loss from this camera. 24x36 print. I won't ever return to canon after my experience with the Leica and Leica Glass. Bonus news. Sigma Art Lenses make L mount lenses to fill in where you need when you can't afford the APO lenses just yet.

The camera to get if you are into vintage rangefinder lenses

The prime reason why I took the plunge for the SL-3 is that I shoot only with vintage glass, and now mostly with vintage rangefinder lenses: M Rokkors, ZM Zeisses and Contax Gs, M-Hexanons and some Leicas too. With all other mirrorless cameras there is the well-known issue of corner smearing and color casts when using wide angle rangefinder lenses. The color cast can be corrected with Capture One LCC profiles, the smearing (supposedly) by having the sensor cover glass replaced by an ultrathin glass. I would rather have a camera that I don't have to modify in order to get the images I want. Leica M cameras appear to fit the bill, but I hate optical viewfinders. There is very scarce information around about whether Leica solved these problems in the SL mirrorless system, and most of what you read on blogs etc. has absolutely no basis on data - there is no way of tracing back idle talk to actual information from Leica. So the only way to know was to try. Let me tell you: Leica solved the problem. Images from vintage rangefinder wide angle lenses are flawless. That does it for me. The outstanding image quality from the massive sensor, unbelievable high-ISO capabilities and outstanding Made in Germany build quality are, of course, welcome bonuses. Other things to note: - The viewfinder is out of this world. You will not believe it until you see it. - I waited for the SL-3 primarily because I need the tilting LCD screen. Worth the price difference. - I don't like Leica colors, so I created Capture One presets to give me Sony colors (I am sure that purists will cringe - so be it, you can't beat Sony and Olympus when it comes to color rendition). - Menus are simple, but the camera could use a couple more programmable buttons. Sony is better. - It should be possible to have more flexibility about assigning thumbwheel functionality. I'm getting used to it, but it is not how I would use them, and there is no way of making them do what I want. Sony is again better. - The joystick works very well. - Manual focusing is very easy, but I also prefer Sony in this regard. - It is very straightforward to set the focal length manually, in order for the (fantastic, at least 5 stops) IBIS system to work as it should. But this function, and the IBIS on/off, eat up two buttons. - Metering is incredibly accurate (it's a Leica, right?) - I have no clue about autofocus - I don't use it. - I think that I paid for video capability, I'm not sure. The first thing I did was to make sure that no button will access any video functions. - I believe that it has a touchscreen. I tried to disable it (easy to do on Sonys), but could not find how. But I am happy to report that it either does not work on my camera, or it is unobtrusive enough that not once has it interfered with camera operation. - Battery life is good but not great. - The sensor shake dust reduction system doesn't work all that well. It moves the specks around, but does not get rid of them. Carry a good blower (as with any other mirrorless camera). Summarizing: a fantastic camera. Expensive but worth the price.

Yes, as long as the lens profile is active when the lens is connected to the camera, IBIS will be engaged. If using current 6-bit coded M lenses, this is done automatically,
