I always wanted a set of anamorphics but the entry price point was hard to justify but now there's some good affordable options.
These are legitimately a really solid set for the price point
pros
-build quality is great, entire lens feels super solid and rigid
-very light considering all the lenses are T2.1
- focus and aperture rings feel very smooth and consistent.
-focus breathing is controlled really well in my opinion
-good balance between lens sharpness and imperfect characteristics
cons
-if you shoot fully open, at certain angles, direct light that spills onto the lens clouds up the image quite a bit, you have to stop down to around T2.8 for the hazy spill to clean up and clarity to come back, but honestly i rarely shoot wide open so don't run into this too often
you'll quickly realize that if you're doing research on these lenses or really most budget anamorphics , that people will find a thing to complain about. whether it's barrel distortion (which is only prominant in the 35m and isn't even a bad thing and can be easy corrected in post) or that the lens isn't sharp enough and has too much character or that the lens is too sharp and boring etc.
like you can't win and a good chunk of the commentary is coming from people who don't actually have the lenses or have creative work that they publicly display or share that back what they are saying.
creative work and fun lenses are so much more enjoyable when you don't have a no name on reddit telling you why they are terrible. these are fun and am gonna use them as much as i can.
here's a still I pulled from a shoot where I mounted the lens vertically to get a 4:3 look, did no correction to barrel distortion
