I started out with another brand of charger. The battery would never stay put, and you couldn't tell if it was charging. I finally upgraded to the Canon CG-800, and wish I would have started with it instead. The battery stays put regardless of how you orient the charger. It fits tightly, and is a fast charger.

The Canon CG-800 Charger is not compatible with the BP-700 series of batteries of the Canon HFR 800. For BP-700 series batteries will work with the Canon CG-700 Battery Charger BH #CACG700 • MFR #6057B002.

What does it mean when the LED starts out yellow and just turns off after a few seconds without charging the battery?

It may mean that a non-Canon battery is being used with the Canon CG-800 Charger or that your battery may be defective.
