Tokina 17-35mm f/4.0 overview

  • 1Description

The 17-35mm f/4 Pro FX Lens for Canon Cameras from Tokina is designed for use with a Canon full frame digital or film camera. This ultra wide-angle lens gives you a 103.9° angle of view at the 17mm end of the zoom, and a bright, constant f/4.0 maximum aperture, making it ideal for low light photography. Two Super-Low Dispersion glass elements and one aspheric glass element produce superior contrast and sharpness, and help control chromatic aberration.

Tokina's One-Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism provides a quick and simple way to switch back and forth between autofocus and manual focus. The lens has been designed using improved seals, making it "water-resistant" (not waterproof), so that damp conditions won't spoil your shooting expeditions. The lens features a water-repellant optical coating, but is not safe to submerge in water or expose to heavy rain.

Designed for full-frame cameras, the Tokina AT-X 17-35mm F/4 give photographers a new wide-angle option. With a focal length of 17mm at the wide side the lens yields a spectacular 103.9 degree field of view which is great for shooting in tight situations or for taking in wide expanses of space.
This compact wide-angle zoom has a bright constant F/4 aperture make viewing and auto focus possible in lower light situations but still maintaining a reasonable size and weight.
Two Super-Low Dispersion glass elements and one aspheric glass allow the proprietary optical design to achieve excellent contrast and sharpness as well as controlling chromatic aberration.
Tokina's exclusive One-touch Focus Clutch Mechanism allows the photographer to switch between AF and MF simply by snapping the focus ring forward for AF and back toward the lens mount for manual focusing.
The mechanics have been designed for better seals around moving parts making the lens more water-resistant than lenses of the past. It has a water-repellant optical coating, but is not safe to submerge in water or expose to heavy rain. The lens is also designed to stand up to the rigors of daily use by photographers in a wide variety of shooting conditions and environments.

    Tokina 17-35mm f/4.0 reviews

17-35mm f/4 Pro FX Lens for Canon Cameras is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 27.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Happy with this lens - Sharp! I went to a local expert store to look at the Canon lens 16-35 and 24-70. Unfortunately, the sales person knew little about the lens and when I kept getting unfocused images (on my 5D Mark III) she said it was supposed to be that way. I tried two copies of each - decided to take one home. The images I shot were not up to par for a * lens. So I went back to more research. I ended up looking at the Tokina and knew that I could return the lens to B&H (where I do buy most of my camera equipment) so I decided to spend half the price of the other two lens. I am extremely happy with this lens. I have taken some really sharp images, great color, and bokeh.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quality and Value I did many reviews of this and other lenses in the category and ultimately purchased the Tokina 17-35. I use it on my Canon 5D Mark II and thus far, I am pleased with the results. I used it most recently for an interior shoot inside a commercial building and the results were very good and sharp. At 17mm, there is considerable barrel distortion, comparable to others in it's class however. Vignetting is minimal at 17mm. I used the recommended apeture of F7 or F8 to minimize any softness at the corners and at 17mm, the corners were sharp. There was some natural lighting inside the building but I used flash and bouce flash to aid in lighting along with a tripod. The build quality is solid but heavy, which is ok with me. For the price, I am very happy with this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Lens for the Price I decided to use a test chart to compare this lens with a couple of 'L' series lenses. The Tokina blew them away for sharpness (at the same focal lengths of course), especially as you move out toward the corners (although it was better than both in the center too!). I didn't expect that at this price level. The downsides: The sliding auto/manual focus ring feels like it's going to jam when switching from AF to MF. You have to find the sweet spot to make the gears engage. Would have preferred a switch. The bayonet mount is also a little tight on my 6D, with little finger room on the barrel to turn it. The petal hood is a little loose and I've found it drifting from full lock position. This can cause dark spots in the corner. That said, I love this lens!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great wide lens for Full Frame Camera I bought this lens to use for Real Estate shots, but I think it will be useful for large group shots and landscape shooting as well. This is a great lens for the price point. I will work with full frame camera and crop sensor but on a crop body it will not be wide enough for most real estate shoots. The only down fall I have found so far is that it sometimes has trouble finding focus. Pushing the button halfway down again usually helps find focus. It's not very often that this happens but have noticed a couple of times so far. With that said for the price point and quality, I would buy again!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great lens for real estate photography I purchased this lens about 2 weeks ago and have used it for 4 real estate photography shoots. For the most part it is an excellent lens. Auto focus is accurate, there is minimal vignetting, it is very sharp throughout the zoom range and the distortion is very manageable for such a wide lens. It does produce a bit of chromatic aberration, but it is an easy fix in Lightroom or Photoshop. I have also noticed a few shots with some flare when shooting towards bright windows, but it is minimal. I cannot comment on how well it works with a wide open aperture because I have been shooting everything between f13 and f16 which is fantastic. This lens is a great bang for your buck and I would purchase it again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid wide angle zoom for the price. Great wide angle zoom! All around, gets the job done, sharp images, smooth focusing and AF. I bought this lens specifically for shooting real estate and needed the extra wide angle focal length for capturing a whole room, no matter how tight the space, from standing in one corner. Tad bit heavier than it's Canon counterpart, but for the cost savings it's worth it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hard to beat for the money! Made this purchase for landscape photography on and up coming trip. But used it at a recent air show with excellent results. Also comes in handy for shooting real estate. It is fast focusing and well built. The f4 aperture is not a problem on my Canon 5d mk3. I would recommend at least giving this lens a serious look for anyone looking for a wide angle.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Lens I guess everyone has same worry. About Canon 17-40, 16-35, and this lens. I'd studied too much before I got this. The result : this one is best. Picture quality and picture's edge distortion are above the average. I heard from one of Pro Photographer. He use this lens instead of Canon 16-35. Even though he use Canon 1ds Body.
