Manfrotto 502A overview

  • 1Description

The Manfrotto 502A Pro Video Head with 75mm Half Ball is an affordable yet remarkably fully featured professional head that represents an advance over the popular 501HDV, with sturdier construction and a half ball for precise leveling on a corresponding tripod. The 502A comes in two versions—the "A" ball-base version such as this one, and the "AH" flat-base version which is separately available.

Featuring Manfrotto's patented bridging technology (inherited from the 509 and 504 heads), the 502A is designed for executing cinematic moves with compact camcorders and DSLR video cameras. The weight limit is 15.43 lb and counterbalance supports up to 8.8 lb. The balance plate's 3.27" range allows you to correct for uneven payloads that might be due to matte boxes or exotic DSLR rig configurations.

The bridging technology ensures that the pan friction control is intuitive and easy to set, but also protected against knocks. There are independent locks for pan and tilt, and drag for both is selectable in a continuous range from zero to the max level. This allows you to operate the head in a confident, smooth manner using the included pan bar.

For video tripods with 75mm half balls
75mm half ball connects to the corresponding bowl in a tripod
Pan drag and tilt drag are continuously adjustable from 0 (no drag) to the maximum level

    Manfrotto 502A reviews

502A Pro Video Head with 75mm Half Ball is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 54.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Head for the Price Range Old head broke and bought this one in a pinch, but it's turned out to be a really nice head. The amount of drag pre-built into tilt is really nice, and of course manual drag improvements make it even better. The big footprint of the plate is nice for balancing as it can slide for and aft long and easily. My only grip about this head is the location for pan lock, which is underneath the plate support and towards the front. It can be tricky to get to from the back (that's what she said) but it's really a small complaint. The pan drag is VERY nice on this head. Overall, great head, easy controls for it and nice weight. 4/5

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Fluid Head For The Price This is a really great fluid head for this price range and Manfrotto does an excellent job with the build quality. The only thing that is hindering me from giving it a full 5 stars is the fact that they put the pan and tilt locks in awkward places. Firstly, they put the tilt lock on the right side of the head. This is very untraditional of all other fluid heads on the market. Being a right handed operator, this is somewhat annoying because I have to take my hand off the handle to lock the tilt. Secondly, the pan lock is in the front of the head. So you have to reach around to the front (where you can't see) to find the knob to lock. Just being picky. But all in all it gets the job done and does a good job at it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Maybe for Left-Handers? Regretably I own this tripod. I used it mostly for my DSLR and shot stills almost exclusively, but wanted to be able when flipping into video mode to have a smooth head (which it is!) probel was when I finally got around to really need ing it as a video head I realized that if you like using your right hand to pan and tilt, that there is no way to do so and than lock off as the lockdown is on the right side of the head.. As for me, I want to have the handle on the right for my right hand and the lockdown to be on the left side. Also I dare you to be able to see the level bubble! Itis under the flatbed and impossible to see indoors without a flashlight.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Like BUTTER! Mounted to the Manfroto 535 Carbon Fiber Tripod. Very light weigth. SMOOTH - SMOOTH -'s like butter. Finger touch controls. The pan and tilt work beaufitully and lock down when needed. Adjustments are precise and are easy to navigate through. Tensioning through the precise Fluid Drag System is a BIG Plus, Customize it to your own Personal touch. It's a perfect Pro Tool that is light but has all the features of the bigger heads. I't a Joy to use and reasonably priced! It's clean Italian design and funcitonality puts it head and shoulders above the rest!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not a Pro Head This head baffles me. And for the price, I should have known it'd be terrible. Reasoning: -the pan lock is located in the center of the cutout at the front of the head (making it extremely difficult to lock off a shot). Heck, it's difficult to lock the pan no matter what. The knob is tucked away so you can't get to it. -the tilt lock is located on the right side of the head, meaning that it is impossible to lock off a shot during filming if you're a righty. -now this wouldn't be as much of an issue if this actually had an adjustable counterbalance system. but it doesn't. so good luck having the camera stay put when you want to finish a movement. So if you're actually planning to do work with this head, don't bother. I'm sending mine back and buying a proper head (as this isn't usable for even very simple work, and it would be a waste of cash). Even if you're trying to learn, this bears no resemblance to a professional-grade fluid head, so you'll just be doing yourself a disservice. I will say that it is sufficiently heavy, large, and well made. It's just not designed for video work at all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth every penny you're paying for If you're doing videography, no doubt you've heard of a video head. The 502 head holds to a very popular standard by videographers and photographers alike, namely because you will not find any other product at this quality at this price range. The build is almost completely made of metal and highly durable. The results I've gotten from using the head thus far have exceeded my expectations from the get go. Pans are silk smooth and with a little technique, it'll seem as though your videos were shot with a motorized system. This video head however, is only made to be used on Manfrotto tripod legs so be weary of that fact before your purchase.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A fantastic purchase for the price point! I just purchased this fluid head and after one shoot I am already more than satisfied with it's performance. I upgraded from a cheap head that started leaking fluid on me towards the end. The Manfrotto head provides the ability to adjust Pan and Tilt resistance so I can customize my moves. And the 75mm bowl option fits my tripod legs and dolly so no need to purchase additional items. The only real trade-off between this and a nicer head is that the pan and tilt locks are a little hard to reach so doing a lock off in the middle of a shot is basically impossible, but I rarely need to do so and I would trade that for the many other great features this head offers.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The gentle giant This head looks huge, metal, strong, and very heavy, yet due to the bridging technology, the head is not much heavier than the 501HDV head. Very lightweight, shockingly lighweight. Handles well with my 60D and 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM. The head is shockingly fluid, more fluid than the 701HDV and the 501HDV. THE HALF BALL You are probably looking at these reviews trying to see if you might need the halfball. For $20-30 extra dollars, yes. If you are on unlevel ground, instead of adjusting your legs, you can just pivot the half ball. MOUNTING FAIL: Upon mounting a dslr or any camera with a wider base than the tripod head (which are a lot of cameras) the locking screw for the plate hits the camera and therefore cannot be locked without having to make the plate be far back or far forward. This is the only reason it is not 5 star. Every manfrotto plate does this and it is horrible.
