Kupo Universal Stand Reviews

As good as it gets

Build Quality: Practical, Thoughtful, and Built to Last This stand is constructed from aluminum with a metal center column and metal locking components—and that matters. There are no plastic parts in the critical stress points, which immediately sets it apart from a large portion of stands on the market. Plastic may reduce cost and weight, but over time it becomes a liability—cracking, wearing down, or failing when you least expect it. This is not that. No Air Cushioning — and That’s Intentional This stand is not air cushioned, and for some, that may seem like a drawback. For me, it’s actually a plus. In my experience, air-cushioned systems wear out faster, lose effectiveness over time, and often rely on lower-quality internal components unless you’re paying a premium. I’d rather work with a stand that is mechanically simple and reliable than one that introduces another point of failure. Leg Design: Where Durability Shows Up The legs are double braced, providing a level of stability that you can feel immediately when the stand is deployed. More importantly, they are secured with nuts and bolts, not pop rivets, and built with serviceability in mind. Pop rivets are fine—until they fail—and when they do, you’re often replacing the stand. Nuts and bolts may wear over time, but they can be easily replaced with parts from a local hardware store. That’s a small detail, but it speaks volumes about long-term usability. Manufacturer Support: A Sign of Confidence The manufacturer backs this stand with a 5-year warranty, provided the original owner registers the product. That’s not just a selling point—it’s a statement. It suggests a level of confidence in the product’s durability and design that aligns with what you want as a working photographer: gear that’s expected to last, not just perform out of the box. Performance and Practical Capability This stand will support up to 22 lbs and extends to a maximum height of 12.5 feet, making it a strong and capable option for a wide range of studio applications. Whether you’re working with monolights, larger modifiers, or elevated lighting setups, it delivers the reach and load capacity needed without stepping into a higher price tier. That combination makes it a solid player regardless of the price point. Real-World Takeaway What stands out most here isn’t any single feature—it’s the philosophy behind the build: keep it simple, use durable materials, avoid unnecessary failure points, and make it serviceable. This is the kind of equipment that doesn’t try to impress you with features—it earns your trust over time. And in a working studio, that’s exactly what matters. Buy one and thank me later.

I bought the 12 foot stand- though the specs say it closes down to 42 inches – it is 45! Could I be doing something wrong?
Asked by: FPB
There should only be one way to close the Kupo Universal Stand (Black, 12.5'). The manufacturer does state that the closed length of the stand is 42.1 inches, or 107 cm. I would make sure that all risers on the stand are at their shortest setting, and also make sure the knobs on the stand are not interfering with each other and restricting the stand from closing properly. You may also check to ensure no additional studs or accessories are connected to the top of the light stand.

The Kupo Universal Stand (Black, 12.5') supports more weight (up to 19.8 lb), and the Kupo Midi Pro Stand (Air-Cushioned, Black), B&H # KUKS040511, can support up to 11 lb. The non-air-cushioned version weighs 5.1 lb, while the air-cushioned version is 2.9 lb.

Will this hold the Aputure 120D light?

I think it will. I have used it to support a pair ribbon mics which weighed about 2.5 lbs. As long as nobody bumps into it, you should be ok.
