Canon ST-E3-RT overview

  • 1Description

The Canon ST-E3-RT Speedlite Transmitter can help you take full advantage of all the features on Canon's Speedlite 600EX-RT and 430EX III-RT flashes. The ST-E3-RT makes complex lighting setups simple by facilitating radio-controlled, two-way wireless transmission up to 98.4' away, among up to five groups or fifteen individual Speedlites. It has controls similar to the Speedlite 600EX-RT, including multiple flash metering options, and a variety of flash modes. Compact design with highly reliable construction combined with a clearly laid-out information panel and buttons with back lighting make this an indispensible tool for advanced professional flash photography. The ST-E3-RT represents the next generation in wireless flash systems.

Note: Because it does not have an optical transmission function, the Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT is not compatible with earlier Speedlite models such as 580EX II.

Newly-designed wireless system uses 2-way radio wave communication for enhanced communication among master and slave units. Achieves a transmission distance of up to 98.4' (30 m), all at a 360 degree angle.
Up to 5 groups, or 15 individual flashes can be controlled via 1 transmitter.
Supports E-TTL II flash, manual flash, stroboscopic and auto external flash metering.
Dot matrix LCD panel displays all pertinent information simultaneously and backlit control panel means easy operation.
8 types of custom functions, 3 types of personal functions.
Improved hot shoe contacts for more reliable information transmission and operation.
Slave operation confirmation:
Green Light--Lit: Radio Transmissions Okay
Red Light--Lit: Not Connected
Blinking: Transmission Error/ Too many units
Orange Light--Lit: Sub-master transmission
Blinking: Receiving remote release shooting, linked shooting signal

    Canon ST-E3-RT reviews

ST-E3-RT Speedlite Transmitter is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 318.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great radio, when there's ambient light I used the ST-E3-RT with 3 600EX-RT flashes for a wedding reception and loved the ease of the system and the results -- that is, when I could focus. There is no focus assist beam when the radio trigger is on-camera, so as soon as it gets dark, focus performance diminishes significantly. You then have to mount one of the flashes on-camera to get improved focus, which defeats the whole purpose of off camera flash. So, the radio system works best when you're trying to create some fill in good-to-average light situations. Once it gets dark and you want to use the system to create off camera light, you're out of luck.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 90 % perfect This is a product I have wanted for a long time, and it works very well, but...... It should articulate like the flashes do, meaning go from the flat position that is currently to a screen up, vertical position so it can be read when the camera is at an eye level position on a tripod. I would like to see this change made in a new product. Very frustrating to have to either remove it from camera or remove whole camera from tripod to change settings, or carry a small ladder to be able to see the screen while it is mounted to a tripod. Just my 2 cents. I own a lot of canon gear including four (4) 600 ex rt speedlights which I love. Make this product go from good to GREAT! You can do it.....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 2 600EX's? Buy this now! If you have a minimum of 2 600EX-RT speedlite you already know the power of this radio system. Yeah it is missing the autofocus assist beam. But really if it comes to needing Auto-focus assist, sacrifice the fancy off camera lighting and put a 600ex on camera. Super intuitive menu just like the 600EX. If you are thinking about it, its a no brainer. Work fast, work smart. It's what this system is all about. Oh yeah you can trigger the shutter from a remote speedlite when this is attached. Rated 5 out of 5 by from It just works! My Speedlite Transmitter simply works and works so well. I'm new to Speedlites and jumped in and purchased this and three 600EX-RT's and am loving the radio function. Controlling all three flashes from the unit over great distances or hard to reach locations is a dream. Having this capability allows my creativity to not get bogged down with inadequate gear. Thanks Canon!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to Use Initially considering third party radio flash transmitters because of cost, I am glad I spent the extra cash and stayed with Canon. I use the transmitter with the Canon 600EX-RT and improved the quality of images 1000% over on-camera flash and without a lot of complexities and fussy adjustments. Because of the similarity of the transmitter display with the flash display, and the immediate connectivity, I spent a very few minutes with the manual and was quickly up and running. I would have liked a lower price tag, but I don't regret springing for the Canon name. It helps assure compatibility with flashes and cameras with ease and quality of images.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Speedlite Transmitter I have only had the ST-E3-RT for about 2 weeks, however I have read the entire manual and tried it on my 3 Speedlights. It all seems to work great and it's easy to use. The only issue that I have with it, is that it fits too tight into the shoe of the camera. I have a 5D MKIII and I like how the 600ex-rts fit. So it is not so easy to remove. The dial it's also not as smooth to turn as I thought, although it may have been designed that way to avoid changing settings accidentally when moving the camera. Definitely a worthwhile investment vs using Pocketwizards which pretty pricey to buy for each flash.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from So close Canon had a winner with the older ST-E2 but is a bit short with the new radio transmitter ST-E2-RT. The omission of the focus assist light is major. My Canon 5D Mark II and Mark III cameras can focus well in daylight, but a dark room it is a challenge. The cameras just miss too much without a focus assist light. Canon omitted this feature and any other maker of radio transmitters also has no assist. So Canon has a great radio tool that may not deliver focus. As well it would have been better if we could integrate the ST-E3-RT with existing radio products. We have owned other radios for over 15 years. Some older receivers are built in our studio strobes. But the Canon will not talk to the current studio equipment. It is unfortunate that the Canon product has been priced at level higher than we've paid for radios with no cross communication. And no focus assist at this escalated price. Canon acts like they invented radio transmitting, but really we've been fighting line of site for a decade. We bought the new 600 flash system, but it really talks about Canon not understanding the studio photographer's big picture.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost Perfect The speedlite transmitter finally solves an obvious problem. Canon definitely got this right in so many ways. I have been using this with 3 600ex-rt's and it was easy to learn, especially with help from Syl Arena's class on Canon Learning Center website. As others have stated, I wish it had a little focus light built in so I wouldn't have to use a full-sized speedlite to grab focus in low light. And there's probably a reason for this that I do not understand, but you can use Normal Sync, Hi-Speed sync, yet NOT Second Curtain Sync. Seems like a radio-triggered unit should be able to fire Second Curtain, but I guess not. Maybe Canon will figure this out in the future.
