Oben CT-2491 overview

  • 1Description

The CT-2491 Carbon Fiber Tripod from Oben is an extremely sturdy support for any DSLR, mirrorless or point-and-shoot camera or camcorder. With a load capacity of 39.6 lb and a maximum height of 72.5", the tripod offers a number of advanced features that ensure its stability and reliable performance.

The tripod features ergonomically designed rubber twist locks on each leg. Because legs are non-rotating, all three of a leg's locks can be disengaged at once with a single twist of the wrist. This enables extremely fast setup of the CT-2491. A thoughtful leg design makes it a simpler task to service and maintain the leg sections.

With its 6x carbon fiber legs and center column, the CT-2491 is relatively lightweight (3.50 lb) and solid, ready to survive the rigors of professional work. The tripod chassis is cast aluminum alloy for further strength.

The CT-2491's rapid center column extends with a twist of the butterfly knob. For protecting your camera when the column is retracted quickly, there's a rubber damper under the center-post collar. Steel locking screws underneath the collar enable you to fasten a camera head more securely.

Pull-in/push-out positive leg locks allow you to set the positions of the three legs independently at three different angles. This allows you to shoot from low angles or on uneven terrain. For stability on softer terrain, the CT-2491 features metal spikes that retract and emerge by twisting the foot's rubber portion.

For extreme low-angle shooting, the center column can be split into two sections with the provided hex key. The shorter column leaves no protruding parts under the tripod collar, allowing you to extend the legs out to their maximum angle. For a faster method, the center column is also easily reversible. These features are especially ideal for macro and close-up photography. The retractable metal counterweight hook serves as a stopper at the bottom of the center column.

Ergonomically designed rubber twist locks on each leg are non-rotating so all three of a leg's locks can be disengaged at once with a single twist of the wrist enabling fast setup
Legs with four sections tend to collapse shorter for easier portability. The CT-2491 folds to 23.3".
Reversible 1/4"-20 & 3/8"-16 screw fits almost any head
Bubble level on tripod chassis
Center column is grooved to prevent its rotation
Split center column for low angle set-up
Spring-loaded metal counterweight hook at the bottom of the center column
Integrated aluminum loop for attaching an optional shoulder strap
Retractable metal spiked feet provided stability on ice and soft terrain
Included padded carry bag features dual heavy-duty zippers, an interior pocket, and extra room to accommodate a head

    Oben CT-2491 reviews

CT-2491 Carbon Fiber Tripod is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 25.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good value, but has some flaws This Oben model is quite sturdy, and a good value especially if you get it on sale. It does seem to have some odd design flaws, however. The center column clamp does not grip the post securely because the diameter of the post is slightly larger than the top fitting. This allows it to wobble slightly. If you detach the center column and clamp the fitting alone, the problem is solved, but of course you lose that vertical adjustment. The bigger problem is that the lower fitting on the center post has a sharp edge that damages the carbon legs when they are folded. There is a rubber o-ring just below the sharp edge and if it was a bit larger in diameter, it would prevent this damage from occurring. As is, however, it serves no purpose whatsoever that I can see. A very confounding design.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Update on Oben tripod issues by Randy Oben sent a new set of shims to see if it would help with the center column wobble. Unfortunantly it did not. The design for the center column is not capable. I did manage a fix by removing the entire center column and replaced it with a flat base that Kirk had for a similar issue with Gitzo tripods. With an Oben leveling base and my Induro bhl3 ballhead I now have a rock solid system, albiet my ballhead and leveling base are heavy. Without this fix, I would look elsewhere. With the fix I would give my setup 4 stars. If Oben made a lighter version ballhead, leveling base and flat base in one single piece they would earn a fifth star. Keep tuned, they called me and asked how happy I was with my solution and hinted a fix is on the way.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Hated this tripod Bought this tripod as a kit with the head and was excited to get it but was not at all happy. The tripod is stiff and difficult to close, some of the leg sections stick and have to be nearly forced to close. Compared to my Benro this is a waste of money. What I did like is that it is tall enough for my purposes on uneven ground. B&H took it back without any trouble (I love you guys :) ) and I wrote to Benro telling them what I was looking for and they recommended their Induro line. I bought one from Induro and couldn't be happier.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Fatal flaw....... I like EVERYTHING about this tripod.......except its ability to carry out the primary function of a tripod; to hold the camera/lens rock steady. The overall fit and finish of the tripod is excellent, the height-to-weight-to-folded length trade-offs are all excellent, the padded carrying case is great and it accommodates both the tripod and a ball head, it has retractable spike feet as standard equipment (Gitzo Mountaineer does not) and the legs are remarkably sturdy and rigid, really more rigid than I expected. However, where the whole picture (no pun intended) completely unravels is at the center column; it is unbelievably wobbly. We've all heard that the steadiest configuration for a tripod is with the center column fully down but with this pod, that's its loosest position. In this position with the column fully tightened, I can take the bottom end of the column between my thumb and forefinger and gently shake it back and forth nearly a 1/4 inch! Consequently, the top of the center column where the ball head would be mounted is also shaking back and forth like a bobble-head on a dash board. I tried taking off the shock absorbing rubber O-ring beneath the ball head mount so that the mount was in direct contact with the tripod and it is still wobbly. At full extension the column is just as wobbly. Oddly enough, the steadiest position I found was with the center column half-way extended. I tested out the pod with the biggest camera/lens load that I have and the results confirmed my fears; the photos were soft. If you look through a very long lens while it is mounted on the camera and just lightly touch either the lens or camera, you can see the picture moving all over. So, I returned this pod to B and H and ordered the Gitzo. I'll let you know how that turns out. Kudos to B and H for superb customer service; the return was a snap and they paid the return shipping, you just can't ask for more than that! Thanks! Note to Oben: fix your badly flawed center column and you've got a winner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My first carbon fiber tripod I'm a Gitzo guy but I just couldn't spend that kind of money on a carbon fiber tripod when I have a metal Gitzo that works just fine although heavy. I looked at the CT-2391 because it has less joints to flex but again, the cost kept me from pulling the trigger. Then B&H put the CT-2491 on sale at a considerable discount and I jumped on it. I removed the center post for the low angle option.Everything is very solid even when the legs are fully extended. It's half the weight of my metal Gitzo's and is shorter when stowed because of the four leg configuration as opposed to the three leg setup. I haven't taken it out on a hike yet but I'm sure I'll enjoy the lighter weight. Again, very solid in any position I have put it in. The heaviest load I have tried so far is a Nikon D810 with a Nikon 80-200 f2.8d and an Arca Swiss B1 ball head. I'm glad I now have a solid carbon fiber tripod for my hiking needs that doesn't weigh me down.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from major problem in center column The center column in my tripod is either missing a part or the design has a critical problem. My tripod has a significant wobble and it appears to be the mechanism that clamps the center column to the tripod plate. I hope it is missing a key part or it is severely under designed.i sent an email and left message with Oben support. once I know how they respond I will update or post again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from THE HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD Unlike virtually ALL other contenders (comperable makes/models; e.g., compare the Gitzo GT1542T - B&H # GIGT1542T), in this corner stands the Oben CT-2491 4-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs, which I purchased because these sticks: (1) hold more than 10x their weight (3.5 lbs vs. 39.6 lbs); (2) stand just over 6' tall (72.5 inches, and approximately 77.5 with the head attached); and, (3) are less expensive than the other guys. With these legs, I use the Manfrotto MH055M8-Q5 Photo-Movie Tripod Head (B&H # MAMH055M8Q5), and, the VariZoom pan-&-tilt fluid video head. In fact, these light, carbon-fiber sticks are so strong and sturdy that I can even use them to support the CobraCrane II Jib, with the 11' Extension Kit (B&H # COCC2EK2), which when fully extended weighs in at a whoping 33 lbs., plus an additional payload of 7 lbs. for the camera, lens, etc. The question is, would I recomend this contender for a shot at the title?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First Impressions Just got my tripod today and was quick to open so I could see if I had one that had the center post wobble issue or not. I am very happy to say that my center post is stable at all three positions I tried. I then attached my gimbal head (Manfrotto) with my heaviest lens (Tamron 150-600) with my heaviest body (Sony A99 II with extra grip) with the center post at max position and then a few lower positions. The center post worked like a champ in every test. As for everything else - unit looks good and seems to be very solid and can easily hold the equipment I have. If it wasn't raining outside - I would take it for some real world tests - but for now I am very happy with what I got.
