If you had to choose a single light shaping tool, you might do well to pick the Impact 7' Parabolic Umbrella (Silver).

First of all it's a really huge, broad light source that wraps light around your subject yielding clean highlights and rich open shadows. But due to the special shape of the umbrella there's a unique mix of soft enveloping light with the kind of crisp detail you only get from reflectors. Put another way, if you combined a beauty dish with a softbox, you'd have a parabolic umbrella.

This umbrella has a unique design structurally as well. The shaft is reinforced for strength and instead of bendable metal, the 16 inner ribs are made of durable fiberglass. The fixed black backing ensures that all of the light output is on your subject instead of through the umbrella. The silver interior provides a more specular and contrasty look than a white umbrella. You can also vary the light-to-umbrella distance along the shaft for a harder or softer light. This silver version is ideal for throwing the light over a long distance. Two of them, for instance could light an entire auditorium or a large graduating class. With the Impact 7' Parabolic Umbrella less is definitely more.

    7' Parabolic Umbrella (84" - Silver) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 37.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great modifier, but extremely unwieldy This applies really to any 7ft Parabolic umbrella like this one: It creates a huge light source that wraps your subject and makes for some really great single-light portraits. The downside is that it probably needs to stay in a proper studio. Going out on location, you will find that most indoor locations don't have ceilings high enough to really accommodate this. You can forget about using this outdoors if there is even the slightest breeze. No amount of sandbags will stop this from taking off like a kite. Still, in the right situation this is a great tool. I highly recommend buying the front diffusion cover for it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Huge but focused light I am a fan of big soft light and this (along with the diffuser) seemed like a good alternative to a bulky and very expensive softbox. I'm very impressed with how the shape of the umbrella focuses the light, while the silver interior and large size create something that is both hard and soft at the same time. The edges have a nice smooth fade for feathering and you can adjust the focus by moving the light up and down the shaft. This is a lightweight product, but when it's open and boomed out over your subject the sheer size of it can cause some unexpected rotation inside the bracket. Tighten everything down well if you're using this at an angle, and have fun!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Modifier and Good Value The light is big, but not all over the place. Meaning, the sheer size makes it a softer light, but there is still a defined fall off at the edge of the light source - it just doesn't throw light everywhere. I'm still learning how far to place the strobe to umbrella. As one would expect, the light output is distributed differently depending on the distance from the flash tube to the umbrella. I would not use this outdoors unless an assistant was holding the umbrella. In my humble opinion, even a small breeze would be too much stress for this umbrella even if you had 100 lbs holding down the light stand.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not quite 7' First of all this is huge. It is also heavy. I found that a cheap plastic umbrella bracket won't support the weight of this umbrella. I opted to use the triple cold shoe bracket from Interfit Strobies, which has a threaded handle to tighten it down, and that holds this weight just fine. I was glad to see that they shortened the stem (in relation to the length of the arms of this umbrella), as it would probably stick into the shot if I had the light close to the subject. This is also definitely an indoor-only umbrella, I wouldn't hazard this out in the wind, it's just not that durable. For studio use, however, it will work just fine. I did a quick measurement when it was open, and came up with about 74 diameter. That's only a little over 6'.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value... We use the 7' umbrella to give our studio portraits the pop that are clients are looking for. So far we have used it on a corporate shoot for a major movie studio, high school senior portraits and children portraits. Our customer comments have all been very positive. We even used it on a macro assignment and to our surprise the customer was delighted in how the light wrapped around the miniature figures. We have spent tens of thousands at B&H and have never been disappointed. The 7' silver umbrella purchase is only our second review and by far the best value yet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well Made! The built quality of thie umbrella is very good, much better than the cheaper umbrella that I have previously. The silver material is able to reflect my 600EX-RT speedlite very well and very evenly, I was surprised that I don't even need a studio light, strobe, monolight for this huge umbrella. I am very happy with my purchase.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good light quality but flimsy This parabolic umbrella produce a very good light with just the right amount of sparkle but still soft. Unfortunately, the shaft of the umbrella is rather flimsy and it will not sustain a heavy use at all.Mine gave up after only five shoots so it doesn't get my recommendation if you are a busy photographer always on location.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Useful tool in the lighting kit Well made, lightweight. Very useful tool in the lighting kit complementing all the other various light modifiers one needs to own. Creates a very nice cast shadow to give the subject a 3-dimensional look while still wrapping the subject in soft light. The silver lining makes skin pop with contrast. Works very well with a quad head holding 4 small speed lights if you don't want to use an AC powered strobe system.
