Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens
Key Features
  • EF-Mount Lens/Full-Frame Format
  • Aperture Range: f/2.8 to f/22
  • One Aspherical Element
  • Super Spectra Coating
Characterized by its slim, pancake design, the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM from Canon is a sleek and versatile short-normal prime that is ideal for everyday, walk-around shooting. Its f/2.8 maximum aperture helps to realize its slim stature, and also suits working in difficult lighting conditions and offers control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques. One aspherical element has been incorporated in the optical design, and helps to reduce distortion and spherical aberrations for high sharpness and clarity. A Super Spectra coating has also been applied, which helps to minimize lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity in strong lighting conditions. Additionally, benefitting both photo and video applications, an STM stepping AF motor is used to realize quick, accurate, and near-silent autofocus performance.

Will this work on EOS RP ?

Will this work on EOS RP ?
Asked by: Anthony
Yes, with qualifications. The EOS RP is a new mirrorless camera and must use a "RF" mount lens. But canon has an adapter to allow the use of all EF lenses on the EOS RP. Check the list of items included with the camera. Sometimes the adapter is include with the camera as a sales incentive.

I am looking for a good inexpensive prime lens for an old Canon 10D. Will the Canon 40mm EF lens fit on a Canon 10D body, and will it function correctly? If not, I will probably go with the newest Canon 50mm 1.8. Thanks.
Asked by: Randall G.
The lens will fit the camera body bu as an EF lens, it isn't designed for the 10D's small sensor. So the 40mm lens will give you the view of a 64mm lens. I like the compactness of the lens but I shoot with a full frame camera so I don't have that issue. I have a Canon 50mm 1.8 and also a 1.4. They are good lenses for the money but again; as you may know, the 50mm on your camera will give you the view of an 80mm lens. An EF-S lens will properly match your sensor, but would not be usable if you ever move up to a Canon full frame camera.

Will the original 7D be able to use video autofocus with this lens? If not, is there a firmware update for the 7d? Thanks!
Asked by: Anonymous
While the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM lens will be compatible with the 7D, it will not allow the camera to autofocus during video. There would not be a firmware update for this. If you need autofocus during video, you would need to look at one of the newer Canon cameras with the dual pixel autofocus sensor, such as the 70D or 7D II.

Please tell me if the Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM lens is compatible with the Canon EOS 1100D camera.
Asked by: Anonymous
The Canon 40mm f/2.8 STM lens will be compatible with the Canon 1100D/T3i body. However, you will not be able to take full advantage of the step-motor STM technology, which enables quiet continuous AF during video recording. This feature will be limited to newer EOS bodies like the 70D and T5i. Otherwise, all other lens functions (like metering and non-STM autofocus) will be retained.
