Oben PD-117 Overview

The PD-117 3-Way Pan/Tilt Head from Oben allows independent camera adjustment on the horizontal and vertical planes as well as 360° panning. The head has a load capacity of 17.6 lb, making it suitable for most DSLR camera and lens combinations, as well as many camcorders.

Two locking handles control the front-to-back and side-to-side tilt, and a thumb screw locks and unlocks the panning motion.

The quick-release system includes an RP-20 plate with a video pin, and a safety lock on the release lever, preventing accidental release of the camera. Two bull's eye levels, and three tubular levels ensure your camera will be level on both the horizontal and vertical axes.

This is an okay 3-way head that is cheap, heavy duty, and easy to use. But, the tilt function is very poor. Essentially, the tilt function does not work in outdoors settings, especially if the weather is on the cooler side. Also, no matter how much you try the tilt function does not hold the camera in place, if you are using a longer lens (I was using a 70-200mm lens). I wanted to save a few dollars to have a tripod set up for the road, but this item did not meet my minimum performance level for photo/video work. I also tried a small birding scope on this without satisfactory results. The pan function works really well, but because of the shorter handles, it is almost impossible to make micro adjustments on the go. The tilt function is so tight that if you are making some adjustments in the vertical tilt, you have to either push it down hard or push it up with considerable amount of force. Which essentially means that getting the right alignment with the object is a daunting task. Now, This may work as a cheap option for photo/video situation where you are only using the pan function and do not need the tilt function to be as precise. Build quality is decent and the form factor is fairly compact. Would not recommend it.

I love the versatility of this head. It is so small and compact that i can leave it attached to my Sirui monopod, and the monopod will still fit in its carrying bag. Genius :)

The Oben PD-117 3-Way Pan/Tilt Head has a 3/8"-16 socket and the Oben AC-1441 4-Section Aluminum Tripod has a 3/8"-16 stud. So the head will fit the legs without an adapter.
