Oben BE-108T overview

  • 1Description

The BE-108T Ball Head from Oben is a lightweight aluminum ball head that features an Arca-type compatible quick-release system. It has a large locking knob to control the movement of the ball, and a separate knob for the 360° panning movement.

The BE-108T's multiple knobs enable higher-precision adjustments to the head than are possible with single-lever heads. Taking panoramic photos is simple, for instance, because you can pan a specific number of degrees while keeping the head's tilt position locked. In fact, the BE-108T features degree markings around its circumference to aid in that task.

This travel ball head has a trim profile, making it ideal for compact travel tripods that have reversible folding legs. A notch in the ball head allows you to quickly change between portrait and landscape orientation.

The included quick-release plate attaches to your camera via its standard 1/4"-20 screw, and is secured in place with an Arca-type clamp. A locking knob controls the opening and closing of the aluminum clamp simply and reliably. Two safety screws on the bottom of the plate help prevent your camera from accidentally being released when adjusting the plate fore and aft. One bubble level on the clamp, and another on the locking knob, both ensure that your camera will be level with the horizon.

    Oben BE-108T reviews

BE-108T Ball Head is rated 2.8 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good ball head, quirky QR-10 Arca plate The head works fine, and has pan control knob not seen in product photo. Bought this to replace ball head on a MeFoto DayTrip tripod that has nonstandard mini-Arca plate (32mm, not 37mm). The Oben BE-108T knobs have a little too fine of a texture for gripping, but still ok. The QR-10 Arca plate is a problem because the 1/4-20 screw requires an Allen wrench to tighten, it has no screw slot for a coin, so is useless in the field without Allen wrench. Accordingly, I am replacing QR-10 plate with Induro PU-50 or PU-60 Arca plates.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Doesn't perform well Although the ball action is smooth, it's nearly impossible to get it to lock tightly enough to hold cameras with heavier lenses in place. The control knobs are impossible to turn once tightened in freezing temperatures. There is a substantial amount of play on the panoramic swivel when the knob is tightened causing movement with the slightest amount of wind. The mounting plate attaches to the ball with a very short screw which can be torn from its socket when moving the camera with too much tension on the ball. I found it frustrating to use, especially in freezing temperatures. Warranty doesn't cover shipping and labor, so it's probably just as well to replace it with something that functions adequately and can stand up to the rigors of outdoor photography.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Very Disappointed Received this ball head a few days ago and immediately discovered that the quick release plate was defective because the mounting screw was wedged into the slot at an angle and would not move. After wrestling with it for several minutes I got it free, but as I tried to use the head over a couple of days it continually became wedged and would require a fair amount of force to dislodge. So I emailed Oben, described the problem, and asked for a replacement. They said they wanted pictures. Fine. I sent a set of high resolution pics and waited. They said call customer service to discuss the problem. After waiting for over 20 minutes for CS to come on the line I gave up. Sent a last email telling them I was going to return it and never received another reply. Fine. Back it goes. I will admit that it seemed like a very nice ball head, I have two others and this one is as good as either. Too bad about the plate and as far as I am concerned Oben customer service does not exist. A reputable company would have sent me a new plate.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from The worst product I ever bought at B&h This ball head was too hard to tight from the first moment. It failed after just a few months. Customer service replaced it with a new one that also broke after just a few uses. It wasn't worth even paying the shipping to get it serviced. Avoid it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what I wanted I use this head on a small carbon tabletop tripod. I wanted something with an Arca plate and enough strength to hole a Sony A7R II with a fairly heavy lens such as a Nikkor 85mm f/1.4. This model was just the right size to fit on the tripod legs. The version without the T at the end of the model number has a flared base which would have made it look odd mounted on the legs I have. Nicely made and plenty strong.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not Impressed I bought this head to put on Bogen 3016 monopod. The ball is very stiff and does not pan well. The locking knob only turns about turn. The Acra-type QR does not lock on the Joby Ultraplate, but locks on my Dolica Acra-type plates. The Joby locks fine on my Dolica ball head and others. I will try to contacting Oben, but may wind up purchasing a different ball head.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I would not recommend this tripod head at all! I purchased an Oben CT-3531 tripod with the BE-108T Ball Head in 2015. I've enjoyed the CT-3531 tripod, but the BE-108T tripod head is a crummy piece of equipment. The locking knob to secure the pan of the head never worked well and recently it has broken off when I was trying to tighten it down. I definitely would not recommend this tripod head!
