Sound Devices 664 overview

  • 1Description

The 664 Six-Channel Portable Production Mixer with Integrated Recorder from Sound Devices has an unprecedented amount of functionality from a unit that can be battery operated. It starts with a low-noise, transformerless preamplifier section, continues to an intuitive mixing surface, adds a host of digitally-controlled routing features, allows room for analog inserts and aux busses, and finally terminates with versatile, plentiful output connectivity. By the way, the 664 can be configured to record digital audio to CompactFlash or an SD Card from any point in that signal flow.

The Sound Devices 664 has an input board that features six balanced XLR connections. Within the firmware, they can be selected to accept microphone or line level signals. Additionally, inputs 1 and 6 can configured to accept AES digital signals. Each channel has a direct output on an independent TA3 connector. There is also an input for a slate microphone, if you don't wish to use the 664's internal slate mic. Two headphone outputs are also provided.

The physical mixing surface of the 664 has the basic features you'd expect, such as trim pots, panning and level knobs. But it also has more advanced features, like sweepable high-pass filters and pre-fader listen switches on each channel.

The 664 has very flexible routing options within its LCD-based menu. When a channel's pre-fader listen switch is pushed to the right, it brings up that channel's menu options. Input level, pre/post track routing, aux buss routing, mix routing and polarity can all be adjusted. Channels can be paired in left/ride or mid/side modes. Phantom power can also be engaged at either 48V or 12V.

The Sound Devices 664 has many output options, from its balanced XLR main outputs to the unbalanced 1/8" stereo tape output. It can even send and receive word clock and timecode signals. Two Aux outputs on TA3 connectors allow custom track groups to be routed to external devices. The outputs can even be set to send AES digital signals of each buss and channel.

The 664 has an integrated recording system that tracks WAV files at up to 24-bit/48.048kHz resolution to CompactFlash or SD cards. The whole device can be powered by five AA batteries or an optional DC adapter.

Note: Please note that not all memory cards are approved to work with this device. Please check manufacturer's website for a list of approved cards.

    Sound Devices 664 reviews

664 Six-Channel Portable Production Mixer with Integrated Recorder is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love It! I've been using the 664 for a couple weeks and it's been great. It only took me about an hour to learn how to use it and configure it for my applications. Pre-amps are super clean. This one unit replaces a rack full of multi-track recording equipment and is way easier to use. Don't count on the internal AA batteries, though. They only last about an hour. Get an external NP battery adapter & a lithium NP-1 battery.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everything but the kitchen sink For the sound operator who wants the total package and a whole lot of bang for the buck-the Sound Devices 664 delivers. This machine is two in one- a mixer and a recorder. Featuring 6 mic/line inputs w/ direct outputs for each, 16 or 24 bit depth and 48kHz, 10 tracks of recording to both CF and SD cards simultaneously, the ability to send separate mixes to these cards like wav poly files to the cf card and mp3s to the sd card. Tons of outs- such as two 10 pin hirose betasnake feeds, a main XLR stereo out feed with 1/8 headphone return, mini xlr (TA3) stereo main outs, aux 1 and aux 2 out on TA3, tape outs on TA3 or stereo mini... all with the ability to designate as mic or line levels. Essentially you could send 4 cameras feeds (probably more if you got creative) with the ability to monitor the the return audio on 3 of those cameras (A,B, C return). This machine has a nice LCD display with adjustable brightness and LEDS that tell you whats up visually. Metadata with your files and labeling takes and the ability to add a keyboard via an usb slot on the side also included! But wait theres more! You have trims for every fader and a sweepable high pass filter for each (80hz to 240Hz), the ability to prefade listen single or multiple channels, the ability to input digital signals in inputs 1 or 6 as well as output these signals, the ability to link channels as a stereo pair. You have a private com send and return on the back as well as word clock (BNC), the ability to generate or Jam timecode from an external source in all frame rates (lemo). You have the ability to expand your record tracks up to 16 tracks using the link port and a CL-6 via your direct outs which are line level. You have a headphone routing matrix and presets and the ability to make your own templates, you have note templates that can be made for takes, you have the ability to visually and aurally monitor not only your inputs but the returns of the sources you are sending audio to. The machine runs off 5 AA batts (Nimh or Lithium recommended) and also can be powered by power supply or through a BDS System (both sold separate). I could go on and on and on. I am just saying- this machine does a helluva lot for the price and can be used for almost any situation whether in a bag, on a cart, tv, film, etc. And Sound Devices is a good company for customer support and is dedicated to being upgradeable in firmware, so most likely this machine will be able to do even cooler things in the future. Cheers!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Industry Standard It did cost as much as my used SUV, but right out of the box it was set up for my first job. It doesn't come with a CF card and you need to go on the web site for a list of approved media cards. I have heard that if you use a non-approved card you can run into issues. Like most people, I am having some issues with it fitting into a bag. I am currently using a Petrol Deca XL and I have to refit all my XLR inputs with right angle connectors. I am told access in the bag to the USB port for the QWERTY keyboard is a conundrum too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Top notch design in the SD 664 Mixer I use the product in recording audio for commercials and film. The unit is designed perfectly around a sound mixer / recordist work. All of the features are excellent and intergrate seamlessly into the daily and project workflows. It is a true 10!
