Blackmagic Design BDLKULSDZMINMON overview

  • 1Description

The Blackmagic Design UltraStudio Mini Monitor Playback Device is a very interesting and a highly useful device that Blackmagic has put out there. It is the "playback" aspect of any Blackmagic capture and playback device (and of any capture and playback device in general).

Where a capture and playback device, such as the UltraStudio 3D or the Intensity Extreme, captures video from a camera, transfers it to a computer, and additionally lets you output the video to a display other than that of your computer's, UltraStudio Mini Monitor only performs the last of these functions, also referred to as "playback." The point of outputting to a separate display is to output to a top-resolution display, the kind that your computer's display likely isn't, the kind that'll give you the best representation of your footage, the kind that'll let you get as precise as possible in color-grading, perhaps the kind that has features like Waveform. Mini Monitor connects to your computer by Thunderbolt and outputs to a monitor by either HDMI or SDI. (You'll need a Thunderbolt-equipped computer, such as any Mac.)

So, if you want to color grade on a top-resolution monitor, and you don't need the other characteristics of a capture and playback device, then UltraStudio Mini Monitor is all you need and it comes at a small portion of the cost of an average capture and playback device (also known as an I/O device).

(If you'll need the "capture" aspect instead, please check out the UltraStudio Mini Recorder).

UltraStudio Mini Monitor Playback Device is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 62.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better Than Expected I was able to do a comparison of the live image from an Arri Alexa outputting Rec709 right next to the same image running thru Davinci Resolve 9 with their Arri LogC to Rec709 lut. The output images were exactly the same colors. I expected to have to set my TvLogic OLED up to different color settings for each scenario and that just wasn't the case. Great Item! Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worked on ROG PC Laptop:) I have one of the few PC laptops that have a Thuderbolt port - a Republic of Gamers (ROG)PC and this worked with it just fine. I am using Avid MC 8.5. The UltraStudio Mini output through HDMI and HD-SDI just fine. It runs a bit hot... One other note, when I went to load the software for this device, it required me to unload some of the other BM software I have on the system. After the Mini software was loaded, I went back and reloaded my other BM software and all works just fine...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Connecting to an LG OLED TV The Mini Monitor works fine but if you are connecting to a 2017 LG TV, the output from this box won't be recognized. I solved this by feeding the Mini Monitor into a cheap HDMI splitter and the TV then recognized the signal. BlackMagic tech support confirmed that I was running the latest drivers and that it SHOULD be working. And it does work fine with my Sony TV. But I learned from their forums that others were having issues with LG OLEDs and that this fix does the trick. Hopefully, BackMagic will update their software for the LG OLED's HDMI inputs, but until then the splitter trick is working great.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disgusting lack of support from Blackmag i only wish zero stars were possible. bought this (admittedly cheap) monitor to use with my 2014 mac pro. worked great for about 20 hours and then died completely. doesn't work on any machines.have submitted six support requests to blackmagic and spent 45 minutes on hold with their phone support and NOTHING. there has been ABSOLUTELY NO effort to address my non-working product. suggest avoiding this company's products based on this and other customer service (or lack thereof) experiences.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great for a reference monitor in Davinci or FCPX great for using with Davinci Resolve or FCPX. If you have a 10bit monitor get this. But its not a second monitor (where you drag the mouse on and such). A 10 bit reference monitor really helped me take my color grading to the next level.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst experience ever and AWFUL support bought as a low cost solution for monitoring and grading since my acquisition is 100% card based and i do not need an input device. my first one stopped working while editing with a client and was embarrassing to say the least. bought a second one (HUGE MISTAKE) to fix the problem because budget was tight at the time and needed my client/grading monitor to be working again ASAP. once again this device FAILED me while editing with a client and will not work properly at all. when it was working it never would get rid of the silly vertical white line on the left edge of the frame, and would produce random red spots and flickering black lines on screen. on top of this when it does decide to crash, i have to leave FCP and force quit to get back to editing, add to this perhaps the WORST customer support from ANY company ive dealt with and you have a recipe for disaster. check their forums on this, there are NO answers to any questions and issues people have with this and other products, spend the extra whatever and get the AjA, yes you lose davinci grading, but the first time your product fails whilst with a client editing, the embarrassment and hassle wont be worth it anyway. this is not and should never be called a professional device, put it in the soccer mom section and take it out of pro video

Rated 5 out of 5 by from UltraStudio Mini Monitor Playback Great low cast solution for monitoring broadcast quality video vis Thunderbolt. I use i with a MacPro and SDI to Panasonic BT series monitor. Only con is that you cannot split audio separate from the HDMI or SDI so audio may not be in sync if coming from system because of digital delay of device.
