UltraStudio Mini Recorder is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 174.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cheap and good A little bit difficult to set up, but works great to a cheap device. A couple of hours to install, update, setup and test the SDI and HDMI ports with my EX1 and 5D mark III (without audio). Could be easier to install, but works great capturing the signal to a 2012 MacBook Pro 8GB and streaming video using the livestream software. Need to setup 3 steps after install software and update: 1- the settings in the Apple menu to choose the port 2 - the Preferences in the media Express software 3 - the camera settings to match to the software. EX1-SDI out and 5D III-HDMI out.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good for dumb capture I bought this in the hopes of doing direct capture from my C100 to my MacBook Pro, but unfortunately the device is dumb in the sense that it only passes along the signal it is given. The HDMI output of the C100 is 60i, regardless of the frame rate the camera is set on. Smart devices like the Ninja 2 or Ninja Star are able to unwrap that 60i signal and output a true 24p signal for recording, but this device does NOT do that. It seems to be a great recording device if all you need to do is pass along a signal from a camera to a computer. I returned mine, not because I was unhappy, but because I just bought the wrong device.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Does the job but tends to overheat and stop working. It's the cheapest option for HDMI HD capture. I use it with a Mac Mini late 2012 and it works fine most of the time. Occasionally it will not appear on the list of devices - because it tends to get pretty hot. Unplugging and replugging it seems to get things working again, but I wonder how long before it stops working all together. An On/Off switch would have been great, since the device is continuously powered as long as it's connected to a thunderbolt port. An switch would allow users to turn it off when not in use (giving the circuitry a chance to cool down) and hopefully prolong it's life span.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Perfectly For Video Streaming I needed something to help stream video from my HD video camera to my 2012 MacBook Pro to my Ustream account. I installed software from the included flash card, opened the preferences to access HDMI,(SDI is the default), connected a Thunderbolt cable to my Mackbook, fired up Ustream Producer and the software recognized the Ultra Studio right away. The quality of the video was superb!!! Thank you B&H for an excellent price and quick delivery. Anybody else having issues with this product may need to read the directions or just use something else. For my services it handled what I needed it to do.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome, inexpensive, but don't plug two in at once!! I love the Mini Recorder. I have the UltraStudio Express (more ports/connections), but most of the time the Mini Recorder does the job, since I use SDI video which has embedded audio, and it only takes 1 cable! HOWEVER, CAUTION: Do NOT plug two of these into a Macbook at once. I did that and immediately fried one. Because it was out of warranty, Blackmagic Design refused to repair/replace it without some ridiculous fee, so I just bought a new one and accepted the loss. However, it is my opinion that Blackmagic Design should have somewhere stated that you can not plug two in at once. I blew one up through zero fault of my own, and they didn't want to make it right. So while the product is amazing and I'm a huge fan of their products, I had to give 4 stars because the customer support/care was a major disappointment.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great little gear at this price it's great with thunderbolt connection (but you will need a latest mac with thunderbolt) and no external power needed. I have tested both HDMI and SDI connection works, just need to switch it in the Black Magic setting under system preference. It works very well with BlackMagic's Media Express for video capture. I have captured a live event for 2.5 hours and it has no problem. However, the box said it works with Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere, I cannot make Final Cut recognize the hardware. Adobe Premiere does recognize it but the capture will freeze after like 30minutes capturing

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Avid users BE ADVISED This is not a plug and play device when used with Avid. It works, but it took some serious fussing with, hence my general low rating. In the end, this is a case of you get {tons of frustration} what you pay for. I use Avid Media Composer 8 on a MacBook Pro running OS Yosemite. I bought the ultrastudio mini recorder to capture live camera feed out for on-set, off-line editing. The ultrastudio mini comes with a sd card with the latest driver and user manual. This driver DID NOT WORK with my Avid software. My computer and the included Blackmagic desktop utility software could see the video signal, but device would not play nice with Avid. I had to go to Blackmagic's website, download and install an older driver: Version 10.4.1 to get job done. Once installed, device worked after extensive trial and error. Even then, it is very persnickety and locks up if you even sneeze wrong.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from works like a charm Just getting started with video streaming and hooked this up with my XA-10, mac mini, using Wirecast. It took a little fumbling around to get the settings right. Trick was to go into sytem properties and select the hdmi option to get the signal through. After that, no problems streaming to ustream using a 4G connection. It is not yet battle tested, but it is destined to stream various events, approx. 60 minute long, up to 120 minutes from a very mobile and minimalistic setup. Don't have any problems with it, but wish I could hook up 1-2 others in some thunderbolt daisychain, but that would really make me happy.
