Olympus 60mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

A versatile lens optimized for working with close-up subjects, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro from Olympus is a 120mm equivalent prime for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras. Pairing with the telephoto focal length, the lens offers a maximum 1:1 magnification and a 7.5" minimum focusing distance to permit photographing close subjects with fine detail. A Focus Limit Switch can also be used to better facilitate working at close or distant range by constraining the focusing mechanism for faster, more precise AF. Also contributing to focusing performance, a Movie & Still Compatible system is used to offer quick, quiet, and smooth AF that is suitable for both photo and movie applications. In regard to the optical design, extra-low dispersion and high refractive index glasses are used to control a variety of aberrations and a ZERO coating has applied to suppress flare and ghosting to improve contrast and color accuracy.

Telephoto prime lens is designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless digital cameras and provides a 120mm equivalent focal length.
Ideal for macro shooting, this lens offers a life-size 1:1 maximum magnification along with a minimum focusing distance of 7.5" to suit working with close-up subjects. The lens barrel also has an indicator window with scales for working at 1:1.3, 1:2, and 1:4 magnifications, and a Focus Limit Switch can be used to constrain the usable focusing range for faster, more controlled performance.
One extra-low dispersion element suppresses chromatic aberrations and color fringing to realize a high degree of clarity and color accuracy.
One E-HR (Extra-High Refractive index) element and two high refractive index elements are also featured in the optical design to control spherical aberrations and distortion for accurate rendering and high sharpness.
A ZERO (Zuiko Extra-low Reflection Optical) coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) autofocus system benefits both photo and video applications due to its smooth, quiet, and fast performance.
Internal focusing mechanism maintains the overall lens length while focusing for easier use when photographing close-up subjects.
Splashproof and dustproof construction benefits working with this lens in inclement conditions.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth bokeh quality.

    Olympus 60mm f/2.8 reviews

M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro Lens is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 169.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A very fine macro lens I use this mostly on an EM-1 and occasionally on an EPL-5 to shoot flowers and insects. It has enough working distance for the nasty little buzzers! I was used to using a Sigma 180mm f/2.8 OS HSM on a D700 and then a D610; this is as good! The larger DOF with m4/3 lenses is an advantage here as you can use a better light gathering f/9 in stead of f/16 or higher to get enough DOF. The lens is tiny (the Sigma was like a recoilless rifle!) and very sharp. The EM-1 with this lens on it weighs considerably less than just the Sigma lens did! Not so good is Oly doesn't include hoods with most of their lenses; what are they thinking?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nineteen Stars out of Twenty... I've always wanted a dedicated macro lens, without the inconvenience of bellows or tubes, and the Olympus 60mm really fills the bill. I purchased a clear filter, which is a must have, and the lens hood, which is a semi-must have, depending on your POV with this lens. To be able to go from mild telephoto/landscape to shooting lady bugs with one lens and no fuss, really tipped the scale for me. Mounted on a tripod and using a remote release, I use it for photographing coins, small jewelry items, bugs, stamps, you name it. I also use it to shoot video of dis-assemblies of complex items to aid in re-assembly. This is becoming one of my favorite lenses for all-around use.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Up close and personal Olympus 60mm Macro Very versatile lens for many uses not just Macro. Weather proofing is an excellent feature as lots of macro shots present themselves in rainy weather. I have used a number of macro lenses and I believe this one will remain a favorite for it's compact size, convenient range allowing a bit of distance from the subject and outstanding sharpness. Olympus should provide a shade with the lens. The collapsing design of the optimal shade is very convenient and doesn't increase the overall size of the lens much. Changing range on the barrel is a bit fiddly but the compact design doesn't allow a larger dial. Overall very happy with the lens and I am using it a lot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lens Took my new lens with my Olympus OMD EM-5 on a trip to Namaqaland during the spectacular flower season to record insect-plant interactions. The images were very sharp, the colours true and the lens focussed quickly. At 68 years, I find grovelling on the ground with an eye level viewfinder somewhat uncomfortable and this camera/lens combination is really the way to go. When the camera is at ground level the swivelling touch screen makes the image so much easier to see and control. I have also used the lens to produce great short telephoto shots of flower arrays, as well as portraits of children at play. Of course in any kind of hiking situation the light weight of the equipment is a huge bonus.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great great great I shoot a lot of weddings and have started using a 4/3 system during the ceremony and hope to someday go totally 4/3. This lens is great for details like the ring and even portraits. I am not a fan of the construction however and often fear breaking it when putting it on and off the camera body... but that's me. So far no such thing has happened. Just a feel thing I guess. I don't have this fear with the other lenses I use with this mount... Pulling focus is very slow, but so is my canon 100L. Mixed with the 5axis stabilizer on the Olympus I can get great macros handheld and slow speeds... if it were a sturdier build I'd give it 5 stars

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice additional to my camera kits Traveling light is the reason for me to switch to M4/3. This lens does not violate my rule. I've never thought one lens can serve dual purpose -- semi-telephoto and macro photography. And this lens does not add much weight and space to my bag. There is a small bonus -- I don't have to carry extra filters. I own Olympus E-P5 PEN Mirrorless Digital Camera with 17mm f/1.8 Lens and VF-4 Viewfinder. This lens uses the same filter as 17mm lens. Other reviewers can attest image quality. And I'm impressed by it. Yes, the lens is slower compared to 17mm lens. But it's not slow at all. The lens is design for different purpose.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Small but Capable I am trying to build a complete system for my new Micro 4/3 cameras. I have a Tamron 90mm F/2.8 Macro for my Canon SLRs. So this lens is what I am going to use for my macro photography and portraiture. I really love its tiny size and its light weight, and the fact that it is weather sealed. Although it is made of plastics, I think it is a nice trade off for its light weight. Performance wise, I really prefer this one than my Tamron since it focuses faster under macro mode and gives better depth of field given the nature of m4/3 systems.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So small. So light. So awesome! When I got the lens and took it out of the box I have to say I was a bit shocked at the size/weight... it's SO tiny! Haha... still getting used to micro 4/3 I guess. It may not look like much on your camera but in my experience so far it's been outstanding for all my own macro needs! The only thing I encountered that I didn't like was that I needed to call Olympus to figure out how to disable the auto magnifying feature that the lens does right out of the box. Turns out, it's a control inside my camera menu that disables/enables it.
