Audio Ease Altiverb 7 overview

  • 1Description

Altiverb 7 Software from Audio Ease is a preeminent convolution reverb plug-in that uses top quality samples of real spaces to create reverb, ranging from Sydney Opera House to the cockpit of a jumbo jet. The plug-in is CPU-efficient, offers multiple parameters for tweaking the reverb, has total recall, and features 64-bit support.

Altiverb's concert halls and recording studio spaces, including its plate reverbs and digital reverb impulses, are geared mostly towards music production. Adjustments are available for algorithmic brightness, modulation, stage positioning, and tempo locked gated and reverse reverbs. And amazing textures can be achieved by using any sound as an impulse response.

Features geared towards audio for picture include total recall (automation without snapshots), drag and drop impulse response creation, and making of impulse responses using portable radio or even slates (clapperboards). Additional features include extensive and flexible channel setup, and keyword-searching (just type-in "bedroom" or "SUV").

The plug-in's visual browser allows the impulse response library to be more accessible than ever by using photos of the rooms and impulse spaces. Instant gapless loading, organize-by-size, and single-click favorites are just a few of the browser's features, along with single-click downloading and installing of new (free) impulse responses.

Note: Requires iLok if one is not already on the system.

What's New

Look and Feel
  • Altiverb 7 looks better - often-used controls all line up on the front, while the more exotic ones are in drawers beneath

Picture Browser
  • The IR library is more accessible using the new visual browser - quicker loading, organize-by-size, and single click favorites

Keyword Searching
  • A powerful keyword search field makes it easy to find items like "metallic resonances," "bed room," "street slap back," or "brick studio"

Brightness
  • An algorithmic synthetic reverb layer that is tightly tailored to the impulse response provides a type of brightness that a traditional EQ could never boost in a real room

News
  • Keep your IR library up to date - go into the news tab to see what's new and proceed to download and install without restarting, all from within the plug-in

Similar
  • The acoustic space sounds good, but it is not quite the perfect one yet - hit Similar and the software will suggest similar-sounding alternatives to the chosen impulse response

Total Recall Automation
  • Everything, including the impulse response choice, is automatable and while there are still single-click snapshots, you do not need them to automate - you can even read which IR is chosen in the automation curve

Drag and Drop
  • Just drop any audio onto the plug-in to use it as an impulse response - sweep recordings, several type claps or bangs, or any kind of experimental audio like crashing cars or piano chords. The drag and drop IR feature includes new make-up curves that allows the making of decent IRs using a handheld portable radio, or even slates

Chaos
  • Dial in a bit of chaotic modulation and not every hit will sound identical in the reverb - tonal material will be dispersed which means that slightly out of tune notes will be covered up in the reverb tail

Interactive EQ Curve
  • To operate the equalizers you can still use the familiar turning knobs, but an interactive equalizer curve allows you to set all four bands, including the widths of the parametric ones

More
  • 64-bit support. A reverb gate, and straightforward pre-delay and attack parameters. Times can be set in note values locked to a song's tempo, and there is ten times as much space in the "Stage Positioner"

Audio Ease Altiverb 7 reviews

Altiverb 7 - Convolution Reverb Plug-In Software is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from The harbinger of convolution reverb. This is an exceptional plug-in. The library view makes tinkering with the insurmountable possible places to place your track in a fun and enjoyable experience. It is important to note, however, that this is far from a toy. Neophyte sound designers may find themselves scratching their head and getting frustrated with the results. The plus of this being that Audio Ease provides sensational customer support. So while there may be a steep learning curve for some, those people have an excellent support team to fall back on. If you have tried previous version of Altiverb, you're more than familiar with its history as a resource hog, demanding copious amounts of your processing power. Well, that is no longer the case because Altiverb 7 is a very, very light plug-in. I'm giving it four stars rather than five because it cannot do mono-to-mono reverberation without disabling the Positioner option. Quite a pity, but not in any way a deal breaker.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Convolution Reverb Plug-In you can buy! Better then expected, and I had really high hopes for it! You can make your own IR's. For this you need to have real movie slate or use a soundsweep on set. But for my shortfilm we only had a normal hand clap to sync audio and visual. But it worked more then fine and I'm superimpressed!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best digital reverb I've heard yet! I've been looking for a high-quality reverb plug-in for my Pro Tools LE system for a while. Reading the reviews, Altiverb is consistantly mentioned near the top. A minutes after installing it, I heard why. Simply put, this reverb has upped the quality of my mixes noticeably, right off the bat. The real rooms sound fantastic (None of the classic digital verb fakeness in the high-end), and the modeled gear sounds very much like I remember from my time working at large studios. Bottom line: The emulations sound real to my ear, and I'm one to normally not like digital reverb. The flexibility of this plug in is fantastic, as well. The classic reverb tools are all here (Reverb time, pre-delay, eq, etc), but the positioner and snapshot features are really useful. I can't wait to start making my own IRs, too! The ability to easily use my own real spaces in a reverb plug-in is really exciting. If you're looking for a high-end reverb library for your DAW, this is definately at the top of the heap.
