The Hoya 58mm alpha Circular Polarizer Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

This filter is non-coated and has approximately 96% average light transmission. It is constructed from optical glass and precision milled aluminum frames.

Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun.
Circular polarizers are ideal for use with digital cameras and autofocus lenses where a linear polarizer will often disrupt auto exposure and focus features.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works great Works pretty well. I usually use it for landscapes/outdoor photos so it helps make skies just a little more of a vivid blue. The build quality is solid and it screws on with relative ease (once you get the hang of aligning the threads properly). The biggest con I think of is that the threads are a bit squeaky when screwing it on/off the front of your lens. Not sure if this is unique to this filter or if it's because of my lens, but it's not a great sound. One improvement I'd like to see on this is for the element filter to have a start and end point, instead of freely rotating 360 degrees without stopping.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good filter I purchased this filter for a family vacation to Hawaii later on this year. I wanted my parents to have something for their camera to help add contrast and bring out the sky while shooting oceanic landscapes during the day. I got to play with the filter and must say it's a good filter for the price. Keep in mind that I'm used to B+W filters, which IMO are some of the finest made for the money. That being said, I can't give this 5 starts because it's not in the same league of the B+W. Plus, I don't like how the filter element freely rotates. If you're looking for a rather inexpensive filter for enhancing contrast in landscapes, and or shooting through reflective surfaces, I'd say go for it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Results This is my first polarizer filter. I've been getting good results with this filter. I find it's best to use these when shooting outside with plenty of light. You really get a nice vivid pop, and you can make the sky blue instead of a washed out white, when you're exposing for people/objects/anything in the foreground. If you adjust it all the way, you can make the sky really deep and things seem almost surreal, but turn it half way and you get that nice enhancement for your general shots. I wish I could comment on this brand versus others, but this is the only one I've ever used. I was pleasantly surprised with the construction. I was expecting something more flimsy and plastic-y, but it's got a good sturdiness and build quality to it. I had no problems screwing this onto my Nikon lenses, and the stock lens cap fits on the end of the filter, just like it does without the filter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I recomend this filter for every lens. I use a polarizer filter on every lens I have and I never change it. it protects my lens from scratches and it is the most useful filter. It is important o check your lens size to know what MM size you need so you will need to buy a separate filter for each lens. I leave this filter on my lens at all times . You have to rotate it for best results & it only works when you are shooting perpendicular to the sun. It will cut the glare on water and snow and will enhance cloud formations .

Rated 4 out of 5 by from My First Filter I bought this for a vacation I'm taking, where I expect to take lots of water surface pictures. So far I have only tested it out around town and at the nearby lake. Sky pics are bluer, and I can see more of what's going on below the water surface. I bought it because of previous reviews, price and familiarity with the Hoya name. The free rotation is a little weird, and definitely something I will need to play around with, but overall seems like a good filter. I've also bought lots of other items from B&H, and they never disappoint.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Would buy this product again Great filter. What I really like about it is how it does not attract dust. The cheap filters I was using all they would do is attract dust and smudge easily. This filter does not do either plus I can notice a difference in how much bluer the skies are especially when I shoot in Raw format.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great quality! No complaints at all. I like the build quality of the Hoya brand and this CPL is a great addition for your 58mm lens that you don't have to spend a grip on considering the type of lenses the typical user as in their kit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Value for a Polarizer Filer Taking most of my photographs outside in Florida, many of them around water, this filter was pretty much a necessity. It quickly and easily attaches the lens and really brings out the Florida skies and the contrast with the clouds. I've only had it for a few weeks, but so far have been really pleased that I purchased it and have found nothing to complain about it.
