Improving on their Monarch 3 design, Nikon's black 10x42 Monarch 5 Binoculars benefit from upgrades to the glass and optical coatings to improve image quality with the same focus on comfort and performance the Monarch line is known for.

Featuring extra low-dispersion glass elements with anti-reflection fully multi-coated optics and highly reflective dielectric-coated and phase-corrected roof prisms, the Monarch 5 produce bright and clear high-contrast images with accurate color rendition and minimal color fringing. Their powerful 10x magnification allows users to make detailed observation of distant subjects, while the generous field of view helps to minimize the appearance of hand shake that is common when holding high-power optics such as these. The 42mm objectives boost their light-gathering ability to improve views in challenging light such as during the pre-dawn and late evening hours or in foggy and cloudy weather. With the combination of glass, prisms, optical coatings, and a long eye relief, users can enjoy a comfortable and immersive observational experience in most lighting conditions.

Complementing the optical performance are construction details that make these binoculars durable and comfortable to use. They have a lightweight and durable reinforced polycarbonate ATB chassis, and are protected by rubberized armor that is accented with indented palm rests to give them a secure non-slip grip. The optical tubes are nitrogen-filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof and resistant to internal fogging when moving through extreme temperature variations and environmental conditions. A one-piece ocular rainguard covers the eyecups as they hang around the neck and prevents rain and spraying water from filling them, and the objective lens caps are also tethered to keep them safe from being lost on the forest floor. This version of the Monarch 5 is offered here in subdued black, so they won't draw notice in the wild, at the stadium, or when sightseeing around town.

Optical Performance
  • Powerful 10x magnification allows for detailed observation of distant subjects
  • 42mm objective lenses improve light-gathering ability without adding excessive bulk or weight
  • Roof prism light path ensures optical tubes remain thin for a compact form factor
  • Extra low-dispersion glass reduces chromatic and spherical aberrations for increased contrast, improved color rendition, and sharpness without distortion across the entire field of view
  • Phase-corrected prism coatings reduce internal interference to improve light transmission, contrast, and resolution
  • Anti-reflection fully multi-coated optics maximize light transmission across the entire visible spectrum for accurate color rendition and improved contrast and clarity
  • Highly reflective dielectric prism multi-layer coatings boost internal reflection to >99% to maintain image brightness and improve contrast and clarity
  • 288' field of view at 1000 yards
Use and Handling
  • Closed-bridge configuration provides a solid and stable platform for the internal focusing mechanism
  • Large slip center focus wheel allows for precise focus control, even while wearing gloves
  • Right eye dioptric adjustment collar helps to compensate for individual eye prescription
  • 56-72mm interpupillary distance range allows easy use by a wide variety of people
  • Twist-up/click-stop rubber eyecups for use with or without eyewear
  • Tripod mountable with optional adapter for hands-free use
  • Long 18.4mm eye relief helps to reduce eye strain and improves viewing comfort
  • Comfortable 4.2mm exit pupil will cover pupils as they open in low light to keep the full scene in view
Construction Details
  • Environmentally friendly Eco-Glass is made without lead or arsenic
  • Lightweight and durable fiberglass-reinforced polycarbonate chassis
  • Chassis material is temperature resistant, preventing the expansion and contraction that is common with metal, which can cause the optical components to move out of alignment over time and prevent sharp focus
  • Textured protective rubber armoring provides a slip-resistant grip, especially in cold and wet weather
  • Indents on the sides of the optical tubes are ergonomically placed where the hands naturally fall for a more comfortable feel in the hand and a more secure grip
  • Nitrogen-filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof and resistant to internal fogging when moving through extreme temperature changes and environmental conditions
  • Black coloring allows them to remain inconspicuous in all environments
  • One-piece tethered ocular rainguard protects eyecups from water pooling in them from rain or spraying water when hanging from the neck
  • Tethered fold-down objective lens caps prevent losing them during observation sessions
  • Weight: 21 ounces

10x42 Monarch 5 Binoculars (Black) is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 45.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light and bright I tried the monarch 3 and the monarch 5, optically close but the 5 was much lighter. I didn't get a chance to try the 7 but I didn't want to spend that much so I didn't care. I tried other brands in an equal price range and other cheaper nikon models, none came close to the monarchs. This new version has ED glass and also being a photographer using nikon lenses, ED glass makes a big difference. The low light capabilities are fantastic. Build quality is amazing, as it should be because they come with a 25 year warrantee. My only complaint is that the eyepiece cap is not a snug fit, it just loosely sits on there and the strap and gravity hold it in place.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very bright I have an older pair of the Monarchs, maybe they're a Monarch 3? Anyway I needed a second pair and decided to upgrade to the 5, based on a review done by the Cornell Lab or Ornithology. I couldn't be happier, I liked the old pair and was tempted to just get the 3 but the 5 is a huge improvement. They're brighter and sharper than my old pair. This is a great buy for the money. So if you can't afford Leicas then just get these. They really are rather impressive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Waiting for Christmas!!! I bought this for my husband for Christmas. It is now Christmas Eve. He has wanted this set of nocs for a long time. I am excited to see his reaction since he marked it on his Cabela's list and I told him they were backordered which they were. I did a google search and found B & H and there price was $ less than the Cabela's sale price with FREE shipping and handling. Thank you B & H...you are helping surprise my husband at Christmas which is almost impossible to do. :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than expected We live on the water and use the Monarch 10x42s from our home for waterfowl and general sightseeing. They are crisp, light, easy to use and perform better in early morning light then I would have thought. Easy to keep the 10 power steady in our situation. We did a great deal of research and everything that sounded right turned out to be right. Some reviews had complaints (lens covers, black rings) but it seems like those writers did not read the directions. They are so good they make you want to use them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid binoculars I have been using my Monarch 5 10X42s for birding the last couple weeks and love them. They feel good in the hands; the grip is comfortable. The focuser moves really easily allowing you to change focus from distant to close birds without much effort. Compared to my old binoculars of a different brand they are lightweight, easier to focus, and my eyes don't get tired after a couple hours. I compared them to the others in their price-range at @ and these preformed better with less color aberration.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I like em We broght these and the Zeiss 10x32 terra ED to Africa for safari. While not exact apples to apples other than price point, I found these Monarchs more comfortable and more pleasing to look through. However since I have a sliver of Swiss heritage I could not resist giving the Zeiss a try too. The Zeiss are keepers at this price point, and they were nice when we wanted somethingh a little more compact. But...if I needed a 3rd pair at this 300 price point it would be Monarchs again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great pair of binoculars. We use these for birding, already owned a pair of 8x Monarch 5 binoculars but needed a second pair and decided to go up a notch to the 10x. Glad we did, just as bright and clear as the 8x but the added power helps ID those extra far away birds. Don't know of any other brands in this price range that would beat these.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Binoculars for the price We use these binocs for birding and wildlife viewing. We are intermediate birders. They are very clear and do not fog in our humid Texas weather. They have good field of vision for the 10X42. The price from B&H was the best to be found as usual. Shipping was free and took 3 days.
