Rokinon DS35M-C Overview

  • 1Description

Utilizing a multi-layer coating process for consistent color rendition from lens to lens the Rokinon 35mm T1.5 Cine DS Lens answers the challenge of assembling a set of lenses over time. The lens comes in Canon EF Mount and features industry standard geared focus and iris rings that share common position with other Rokinon Cine DS lenses. To aid focus pullers who have to work both sides of the lens, the aperture and focus scales are marked on both sides of the lens.

This 35mm lens produces a 63.1° angle-of-view when used with a full-frame sensor camera or a 35mm SLR. Hybrid aspherical lenses render sharply defined images with a minimum of distortion and chromatic aberrations, with a minimum focus distance of just under 12" from the lens. A removable petal shaped lens hood provides flare protection when shooting without a matte box, the lenses threaded front accepts a 77mm filter ring.

Please note that some cameras may require that Shutter Lock be disengaged when using this lens.

Ultra Multi Coated lenses minimize flare and ghosting, and the lenses are color matched to a standard eliminating the need to acquire an entire set of lenses at the same time.
Industry-standard gearing for focus and aperture rings. Each lens in the Rokinon DS series share common focus and iris gear ring positions, which speeds up lens changes as accessories such as follow focus units or iris motors don't have to be re-positioned.
"Declicked" aperture ring for smooth iris pulls.
A minimum focusing distance of 12" allows you to get up close to your subject.
A removable petal-type lens hood provides flare protection without a matte box.
The lens opens up to T1.5, providing the capability for low light shooting or creating extremely shallow depth of field.

Rokinon DS35M-C Reviews

35mm T1.5 Cine DS Lens for Canon EF Mount is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 29.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Deal You've Been Searching For For only a small fraction of the cost compared to other cine lenses, you're getting almost the same quality product. When compared to the Canon CN-E 35mm lens (roughly $-$ US dollars), the differences are honestly minor. When using apertures ranging from T2-T22, the image quality is quite comparable. The difference at T1.5 is definitely notable, but not a deal breaker. There is a detectable amount of color aberration (color fringing) at T1.5, though it doesn't pop out and the image is still pretty sharp. Final Verdict: You're not getting ripped off if you buy this lens, you're getting ripped off if you buy the other, more expensive cine lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice HDSLR True Cine Lens Use for video on APS-C Canon T4i. No problems. Full manual, as expected. Long throw, smooth, no clicks aperture. Prime selection driver. Long manual focus throw. Prime selection driver. Fast glass. Like Bokeh, background separation, depth of field control. Fixed focal length, in normal range for my APS-C. Great price for features. Tested before purchase. Knocked out rest of field. More expensive lenses, didn't match my specs this closely. Video is different than still. Learning curve is expected. Keep finding more capability using this product. Bought top of line Variable ND to complement. Watch out for color shift with less capable ND's.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from If you can only buy one Cine DS, this is the one. On an APS-C sensor, this 35mm lens is amazing. With the 1.6x crop factor APS-C sensor, it has a 35mm-equivalent field of view of a 56mm lens, which is incredibly flexible. I own the 24mm and 50mm Cine DS lenses, and this one gets the most use by far. For the work that I do, it lets me get some really perfect mid shots of live performances and close up shots for interviews. Also, the focus ring feels great and is very forgiving at a wide variety of distances from your subject, unlike the 24mm Cine DS (check out my other review!) If you can only afford one cinema lens, and you're on a crop or Super 35 sensor, this is the one to get.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very much like it. People don't understand, that functionality has more importance than badge or even quality sometimes. When you flipping lens on film set every second counts. And it is pain to use still lenses in that case. Rokinon did really good with new cinema DS - all lenses has consistent focus&t-stop rings. That's a big deal. Really big deal. Even if quality is not quite there yet. But it is pretty close to major brand lenses you can buy for times more money. So I would call it really reasonable and wise investment after all. I hope eventually they can make real PL glass.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just starting a project My experience tells me that the only way to really know how well product works is to subject it to the heat of battle, which I'm about to do, in the jungles or Sri Lanka and Myanmar. So far,in tests as a cine lens with my A7sII, it seems good, not as contrasty as a CP2, and a bit susceptible to flare and veiling haze. But, I admit I pushed it quite hard in my tests. I tests as a still lens, it does well. Build quality is medium, probably not up to rigorous production, but I will be the only one handling it, so for me this is not an issue. I will report back in a month.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens For the price you can't do better. These have been a great, inexpensive set of cine lenses to start with and build from there. The DS series all have the same focus ring setup so we never have to change the follow focus on the rig either, just take one off and put the next one on. The lenses get a little soft in the widest T-stops, but we've been shooting hand-held so haven't come close to shooting that open anyway.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great lens for the price! For the budget filmmaker, this lens is almost a no brainer. The declicked aperture and markings on both sides are very helpful especially when all rigged up. As with most reviewers of the Rokinon line of cine lenses, the wide open aperture is a little soft but not enough to preclude use.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Manual Lens No gimmicky electronics in this lens. What you see is what you get. Nice weight, and I love the clean-working aperture and focus rings. I use it on my Canon 60D and on my Sony FS100UK using a Metabones adapter. Will most likely purchase another.
