Metabones MB_SPEF-E-BT2 overview

  • 1Description

The T Speed Booster Ultra 0.71x Adapter for Canon Full-Frame EF-Mount Lens to Sony E-Mount APS-C Camera from Metabones allows a full-frame Canon EF-mount lens to be mounted onto a Sony E-mount camera. While doing so, the adapter's optics help to maximize the connected lens's apparent angle of view while providing a 1-stop increase for the camera over the lens's aperture range.

If a lens intended for 35mm film or similarly sized full-frame camera sensors is connected to a camera with a Sony E-mount APS-C-sized sensor, it would project an image larger than the Sony E-mount APS-C sensor was built to accept. Able to capture only the center portion of the projected image, the effective angle of view of the lens would be narrowed, creating an in-camera "crop factor." The T Speed Booster Ultra 0.71x Adapter for Canon Full-Frame EF-Mount Lens to Sony E-Mount APS-C Camera condenses the light from a lens designed for 35mm film or "full frame" camera sensors and projects it onto a Sony E-mount APS-C sensor. This allows a Sony E-mount APS-C sensor to utilize more of the light gathered by a connected lens, which effectively reduces the crop factor while making available to the sensor an additional 1 stop of light for each of the lens's f/stop settings.

This adapter is constructed from aluminum alloy for durability while minimizing weight and its mounting rings are made with brass to further prevent wear-and-tear. Inside are five lens elements in four groups that are designed to provide optical clarity as well as color fidelity, and a detachable tripod foot is included that features 3/8" threads as well as compatibility with Arca-Swiss tripod heads.

The T Speed Booster Ultra 0.71x Adapter for Canon Full-Frame EF-Mount Lens to Sony E-Mount APS-C Camera supports electronic communication between an attached camera and lens. If the lens includes autofocus, image stabilization, as well as camera-controlled aperture functions, this adapter is intended to allow those features to be used. If an attached lens is also capable of generating EXIF metadata when used with a directly compatible camera, the T Speed Booster Ultra 0.71x Adapter for Canon Full-Frame EF-Mount Lens to Sony E-Mount APS-C Camera is designed to allow that information to be saved along with image files generated with a combination of the lens, a Sony E-mount camera, and the adapter.

By enabling camera-controlled aperture functions for a Canon EF-Mount Lens when used with a Sony E-mount camera, program, shutter-priority, aperture-priority, as well as manual modes can be set and used through the camera. Power for these functions is transferred from the camera to the lens, and the T Speed Booster Ultra 0.71x Adapter for Canon Full-Frame EF-Mount Lens to Sony E-Mount APS-C Camera is designed to accomplish this in an energy-efficient manner. When manual focusing is preferred with a compatible electronic lens, an integrated switch can be depressed which opens the lens's aperture diaphragm to it largest setting. The resulting shallow depth-of-field can then be used to help ensure focus accuracy.

While the T Speed Booster Ultra 0.71x Adapter for Canon Full-Frame EF-Mount Lens to Sony E-Mount APS-C Camera is intended for Sony E-mount cameras with APS-C sized sensors, it may also be placed on "full frame" Sony E-mount cameras as well. However, such cameras must be set to "crop mode" when combined with this adapter to avoid generating images with vignetting.

  • Allows a full-frame Canon EF-mount lens to be used with a Sony E-mount APS-C camera
  • Maximizes apparent angle of view of combined camera and lens
  • Provides a 1-stop increase for the camera over the lens's aperture range
  • Five lens elements in four groups for optical clarity as well as color fidelity
  • Supports electronic communication between camera and lens to enable autofocus, image stabilization, on-camera aperture control, and EXIF metadata generation when possible
  • Internal coating minimizes reflections within the adapter barrel
  • Detachable, Arca-Swiss compatible tripod foot with 3/8" threads
  • Aluminum alloy components for weight reduction
  • Brass mounting rings prevent wear-and-tear
  • Locking mechanism for secure attachment of lens with push-button release

Metabones MB_SPEF-E-BT2 reviews

T Speed Booster Ultra 0.71x Adapter for Canon Full-Frame EF-Mount Lens to Sony E-Mount APS-C Camera is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 34.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another excellent product from metabones I love these adapters. I've owned the ef to m43 s version, nikon to emount s version, and now the ef to emount T version. I've had to adjust the glass on each of the adapters so far except for the T version. After a few months of use, there is a possibility for the glass to spin slightly and throw off the focus. I suggest putting a small witness mark so you can easily determine if the glass has moved from the factory calibration. It's very easy to adjust, but just knowing and being proactive will prevent any focusing issues. The extra stop of light can make such a huge difference. I highly recommend these adapters with that in mind as the number one reason. Their durability and excellent craftsmanship will ensure a very long life as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New life for Canon lenses Recently purchased a new PXW-FS7. Already own a fairly large collection of EF lenses. One of the problems you face is the crop factor of the super 35mm sensor. This unit not only eliminates that factor but gives your lens an additional stop of light so low light performance of the camera is improved. The three best lenses are the 16-35 mm F2.8, 24-105mm F 4 and the 70-200mm F2.8. The work and perform phenomenally on the camera with this adapter. Latest version of the adapter works smoothly and the difficulties experienced in earlier versions are all but gone

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Just as Advertised Just got the speedbooster adapter for EF to Sony E Mount to use on Sony FS5. Have tried it with a 24-105 L series...becomes a nice 2.8 lens. Also have tried a Sigma 50-500 f4.5. Becomes an f3.2. Images clean and sharp and allow great image control just as in Canon 5D. Using them all manual.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Beware Great product and works wonderfully BUT Beware ... Infinity focus is unattainable at the widest focal mark on all Canon Mark I glass. Mark II glass works beautifully. This is something that you can work around but wish I had known before purchase. Solid build.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does what it claims. Use it on my A6000 and makes that camera a full frame camera with a one stop increase in lens speed. AF a little slow but I can live with that. Great addition to my camera bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's worth the money Using the metabones on Sony FS7 to attach canon lenses. I tried the cheaper ($99) adapter but the auto focus was useless. The metabones works great in auto and also added a full F-stop.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Diasapointing quality control I bought a Canon to E-mount Speed Booster and returned it due to a large smudge in betwween the glass elements. The replacement unit I received had an internal dust storm between the optics. I called a well known lens repair company in LA, CA to see if they could clean it. They told me they do not touch Metabones products due to its low quality. I then returned it. This is too bad since I need an adapter like this. I am researching other manufactures.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Using with Canon L Series Lenses and Sony FS5 I have used this on a couple shoots so far on the Sony FS5 and so far looks great. Love the extra exposure and full frame field of view. Had to do some backfocus adjustment on the back element of the lens but it was easy enough with the little screw they have on there.
