Leofoto GW-01 Overview

The GW-01 3-Way Geared Head from Leofoto offers precision control over camera movement in three individual directions, making it ideal for studio still life and landscape photographers. The snap-lock control knobs allow the gross positions to be set before the large control knobs apply minute, precise movements. The head can be rotated 360°, tilted forward 90° or back 30°, as well as 90° sideways for portrait orientation.

The GW-01 3-Way geared head has an Arca-type quick-release set, complete with quick-release plate, and features three spirit levels. Each axis features a precision scale for precise and repeatable results.

Close - but knob failed after three months

Relatively sturdy for the price. Knobs felt great - until they didn’t. The pan knob backs off when panning to the left after about three months usage. I’ve been using the gross adjustment to overcorrect to the left and then twist for micro to the right. The solution is suboptimal, but I’ve been too busy to look for alternatives. I have a mix of RRS, Kirk, Gitzo and Leofoto support gear. Leofoto has really impressed me overall, but this one has been a bit of a miss.

The first one developed slop

Nicely made head and looks and feels great out of the box for the price. However, the first one developed slop after a couple weeks of use where turning a knob not only moves the head in the expected direction, but also shifted it in the direction the knob was turned. The second copy has a slight jump or dead spot in the knob on one axis where the head slightly jumps instead of moving smoothly and its right near the level position which is an issue. That being said, I’ll keep it unless it gets worse in a couple weeks like the last one.
