TASCAM DR-40XP Reviews
DR-40 Upgrade!
By Moises
Rated 5 out of 5

I have the original DR-40 (not even DR-40X!). Honestly, it still works great, but I figured that it was time to upgrade. Based on the performance of the 40XP, I’m very glad I did. The sound quality upgrade is huge IMO. The internal mics sound much better (I believe they're using the same mics as the Portacapture series) and the mic pres are a huge improvement. I’m not really a “spec guy,” and I know that the pre-amp has a noise floor of -126 dbu, but what I care about is the tonal quality, and the pre-amps just sound really, really good. Very warm and full, but clean as well. It also helps that this unit is 32 bit float. I know that 32 bit float is par for the course at this point for these types of recorders, but it’s the first time I have used it and I would put 32 bit float recording in the “I didn’t know what I was missing” category. The battery life is great at 18 hours which is way beyond what most handhelds can do. Fast shipping from B&H put the icing on the cake!
