Apple revealed its latest entry into the compact tablet family with an updated iPad mini! Finally, the upgrade we have all been waiting for! Not only are we getting immense power, but we are finally getting the OLED display treatment, which provides enhanced brightness, better colorization, and smoother scrolling!
Overall Design
The new iPad mini has been reimagined with a thinner and lighter design while keeping the typical Apple aesthetics. This makes it much easier to place in your favorite bag, backpack, or large pockets if you are a fan of cargo pants. It manages to also meet the IP67 rating, making it both dust and water resistant. While this is nice to have, it isn’t the biggest feature which is reserved for the new 8.5” OLED display!
Built with Super Retina XDR technology, the OLED display delivers deep, vivid colorization suitable for just about anything you throw at it. Accuracy is enhanced as well, supporting True Tone technology backed by the wide P3 color space, ensuring that images pop with beauty and detail. It has a base brightness of 600 nits, with a peak brightness of 1200 nits, making it great for both SDR and HDR content.
A new camera system has also been built into the iPad mini, giving you crystal clear photos whether you are using the rear- or front-facing camera. The 12MP Center Stage camera is famous for adapting to your presence. If you move around, it tracks you and keeps you within focus the entire time! This is outstanding for chats with friends and family. The 12MP Wide rear camera captures stunning photos and even 4K video!
A newly redesigned audio system has also been built from the ground up. A new Acoustic Display leverages custom tweeters and woofers to deliver crisp sound! What is interesting is how these speakers are hidden beneath the glass display and enclosure, adding a bit of that Apple magic to the device.
Compatibility with both he Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C) are also present, allowing you to draw and draft with ease! With iPadOS 27, the Apple Pencil and Apple Pencil Pro both interact with various applications. Not only can you bring your imagination to life, but you can complete other tasks like answering complex math problems by drawing them out.
There are multiple variations of the iPad mini available, including standard Wi-Fi models, as well as models that include both Wi-Fi and cellular service! Additionally, there are models that include the new nano-texture glass to help with glare and other worldly affects, so keep these two aspects in mind when shopping around for your upgrade.

Under the Hood
The new iPad mini features Apple’s powerful A20 Pro processor! Inspired by the M-series chip design, the new iPad mini delivers amazing performance that is a huge step up from the previous model. New Neural Accelerators are packed into each GPU core to deliver enhanced speed across the entire device. We also get enhanced memory bandwidth which assists with Apple Intelligence-related tasks. With these enhancements, you could work, game, and stream your favorite content thanks to the all-day battery life backed by fast-charging capabilities, giving you up to 50% in as little as 30 minutes.
Storage is where things get a bit tricky because the A20 Pro’s performance levels scale with the storage options. If you get the 128GB or 256GB model, the A20 Pro consists of a 5-core CPU split between two super cores and three efficiency cores. If you go all out and get the 512GB model, that A20 Pro includes a 6-core CPU consisting of 2 super cores and 4 efficiency cores alongside a 7-core GPU.
Overall, we are looking at 2.7 times faster GPU performance and 1.6 times faster CPU performance when compared to the A17 Pro chip. When compared to the 6th Gen iPad mini, we are looking at a massive uptick of 4 times faster GPU performance and 2.2 times faster CPU performance.
Built for iPadOS
If you are a fan of using the new advanced Siri platforms or looking to leverage some Apple Intelligence features, the A20 Pro makes it much easier to perform these tasks. Siri AI can help give you the answers in a natural way while maintaining your privacy.
iPadOS brings a ton of utility, enhancing your applications and usage to streamline productivity. Multitasking capabilities allow you to control multiple apps simultaneously. If you wish, you can connect the new iPad mini to a display via the USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port that also offers up to 10 Gb/s data transfer speeds, allowing you to easily share your documents and presentations!
Conclusion
I personally have a 6th Gen iPad mini, and I find it to be a wonderful device that doesn’t way me down! It is perfect for travelers who may find themselves commuting, traveling on a flight, or even just relaxing at home. The new screen seems incredibly exciting and could be a solution to the jelly effect that some folks have experienced in the past models.
