In a recent collaboration with RED Digital Cinema, G-Technology offers the ev|Series Reader RED MINI-MAG Edition. This reader interfaces with RED’s proprietary MINI-MAG media and connects it to G-Technology’s popular ev hardware for quick file transfers over Thunderbolt or USB 3.0, or FireWire 800 with the optional adapter. Having quick file transfers to less expensive media is important, since a 1TB MINI-MAG can cost more than $3,000—contrast that with a 1TB ev G-Drive.
Before you’re ready to edit, you need your media within arm’s reach. The G-Technology G-SPEED Shuttle XL 24TB contains eight 3TB, 7200 rpm, enterprise-grade hard drives unified with a hardware RAID controller. With all of them working in unison to push data through a Thunderbolt 2 interface (which can deliver 20 Gb/s of data transfer through a single bi-directional channel, as opposed to the dual 10 GB/s channels of the original Thunderbolt), transfer rates of up to 1350 MB/s (yes, that’s Megabytes per second) can be achieved. With that many drives, you can also choose to have a higher fault tolerance with the ability to configure the system for RAID 5 or even RAID 10 and still maintain a fast throughput.
