Intel® Pushes Laptop Gaming & Video Creation to the Next Generation

0Share

Enthusiast gamers and professional video content creators can look forward to getting their hands on the next generation of performance with Intel’s announcement of 12th-generation H-series laptop processors at CES 2022. For the first time, Intel® is bringing its hybrid core architecture to mobile computer systems, which features Performance-cores (P-cores) that power demanding applications, while Efficient-cores (E-cores) handle background tasks and multitasking. The integrated Intel® Thread Director manages everything by ensuring the right task is assigned to the right core at the right time. But that’s not all Intel® brought to the party. The introduction of these 12th-generation laptops was accompanied by exciting updates to the Evo design platform and details about the upcoming Arc GPU. So, without further ado, let’s dive into the innovations we can expect from 2022.

Intel® 12th-Generation Mobile Processors

Intel’s flagship 5 GHz Core™ i9-12900HK includes 14 cores, comprising six P-cores and eight E-cores, that can handle up to 20 threads, making it an absolute powerhouse of a mobile processor. It’s designed to deliver up to 28% faster gaming performance compared to the previous generation Core™ i9-11980HK CPU. Content creators may see up to 43% higher performance with 3D rendering with the new mobile CPU. Other significant upgrades include support for DDR5 memory at 4800 MHz to help boost intense workflows and high-end games. We should start seeing high-end Intel® 12th-Gen laptops from manufacturers such as ASUS, Razer, HP, and many others launch in February 2022.

Although the top-of-the line H-series tends to grab the most attention, Intel® also announced that U- and P-series mobile processors are also on the way for thin-and-light laptops. Featuring up to 14 cores and 20 threads with integrated Intel® Iris X graphics. The P-series will have a 28W power base for high-performance laptops while U-series processors operate between 9 to 15W for small form factor systems. Designed for business productivity and everyday workloads, laptops and Chromebooks with these processors will release in the first quarter of 2022. Intel® is releasing 28 processor models throughout the year.

The Third Generation of Intel® Evo

Accompanying the 12th-Gen mobile processor launch are new additions to the Intel® Evo design format to help ensure that these laptops provide features that enhance user experiences and streamline workflows. They include Wi-Fi 6E connectivity for Gigabit or faster transfer speeds, the Intel® Connectivity Performance Suite, and AI-driven dynamic background noise suppression. Select Intel® Evo verified models will integrate features from the 12th-Gen H-series processors and upcoming Intel® Arc discrete graphics.

Cross-Device Connectivity

Intel® cited a study showing that 70% of people access the Internet across multiple devices, and about 90% of people use multiple screens to accomplish a single task. With that in mind, Intel® acquired Screenovate, in December 2021, to help deliver a unified experience across different platforms. For instance, the CES 2022 presenters used a special application to enable an Android tablet as a second screen alongside an Evo certified Windows laptop, allowing windows and apps to be moved seamlessly between the two devices. But Intel® isn’t stopping with mobile devices. When this technology releases, you’ll be able to take a picture with your phone and display it on a smart TV. Other features include see text messages from an iPhone and heartrates reported from a smart watch in real time from the laptop. Cross-device functionality is expected to launch this holiday season.

A Deep Look at Arc Graphics

Intel® capped off its PC computing segment with a short glimpse of the upcoming Arc Graphics technology, which is the company’s foray into dedicated graphics. The main difference between Arc graphics and other discrete video cards is how they’re specifically designed to work with Intel® Core™ processors to deliver high-quality gaming experiences and accelerated creative workflows using Deep Link. Intel® Deep Link technologies optimize communication between the CPU and GPU to enhance performance according to the workload, meaning that tasks can be shifted back and forth between the two as needed.

One Arc feature is Hyper Encode, which accelerates often long video rendering times. While traditional encoding handles each frame of video one at a time, relying exclusively on the GPU, Hyper Encode distributes the workload between the CPU’s integrated graphics and discrete GPU. By having two processors at work, encoding tasks can be 1.4x faster. Other Deep Link features include Dynamic Power Share and AI-enabled editing. Gamers might appreciate enhanced battery life and video streaming performance along with games that are specially optimized for Intel® 12th-Gen CPU and Arc systems. Intel® Arc graphics are already being integrated into more than 50 mobile and desktop computer designs with partners such as Alienware and Lenovo. The first Arc GPU systems are expected to launch in the first quarter of 2022.

New for 2022

Everyone from enthusiast gamers to content creators and everyday users have a lot to look forward to from Intel® in 2022. Let’s not forget that Intel also expanded its selection of 12th-generation desktop processors, which include the new Intel® Laminar Coolers. The company also stated that innovations from its next generation architecture, Raptor Lake, is already booting Windows―hinting at a likely launch at the end of the year.
