0Share

As cameras and laptops continue to become more powerful, while also becoming more portable, LaCie is following suit with two new Thunderbolt™ 3 storage and docking solutions: the 1big Dock and the 1big Dock SSD Pro. The 1big Dock is designed as an epicenter for 4K workflows and combines either a 4TB, 8TB or 16TB IronWolf Pro hard drive that delivers speeds of up to 240 MB/s with two Thunderbolt™ 3 ports, a USB 3.0 Type-A port, a DisplayPort 1.4 video output for 4K video, and dedicated SD and CompactFlash card slots. The 1big Dock is compatible with systems running at least macOS 10.12 or Windows 10.

While the 1big is an impressive piece of gear, filmmakers and digital imaging technicians working with cinema-grade 6K or 8K video will need a little more, and to that end, there is the 1big Dock SSD Pro. The IronWolf Pro hard drive is swapped out for either a 2TB or 4TB FireCuda NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD that delivers data transfer speeds of up to 2800 MB/s, and connectivity options include two Thunderbolt™ 3 ports, a USB Type-A port, and DisplayPort 1.4 video output. To further strengthen the more professional angle of the 1big Dock SSD Pro, the dedicated card slots include SD, CFast 2.0, and CFexpress. Compatibility is reserved for systems running at least macOS 10.14 or Windows 10.

Both the 1big Dock and 1big Dock SSD Pro connect to your host system using one of its Thunderbolt™ 3 ports, leaving the second Thunderbolt™ 3 port available for daisy-chaining additional devices or providing up to 70W of charging power. However, to take advantage of all 70W, your laptop must be plugged in using its power supply. Otherwise, you'll only get 45W, or 30W if you're daisy-chaining multiple devices. Users will also have access to LaCie's Tooklit software suite and be able to redeem a one-month membership to Adobe's Creative Cloud All Apps plan.

Are either of these the storage and docking solution you've been waiting for? Will you be adding either to your workflow? Feel free to leave your comments below.
