LaCie’s new lineup of Rugged and Rugged PRO portable SSDs are designed for filmmakers, photographers, and media professionals who need to remain mobile while retaining large storage capacities, high performance specs, and a durable design.
Both of these SSDs employ Seagate FireCuda NVMe M.2 SSD media, can withstand drops up to 9.8', up to two tons of crush resistance, and are IP67 rated, making them resistant to dust and water. Both also feature hardware-based Seagate Secure self-encrypting technology, are compatible with Windows 7 or later and macOS 10.12 or later, and include a one-month membership to Adobe’s Creative Cloud All Apps plan.
Which of these is best suited for you? That depends on the kind of work you’re doing, and here is what sets these two lineups apart. The Rugged is available in capacities of 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB, and is best for those looking to transfer and edit raw 4K video. Its 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C port delivers data transfer speeds of up to 950 MB/s. The Rugged PRO drops the 500GB options and is available with either 1TB or 2TB of storage. It upgrades the USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C port to a Thunderbolt™ 3 port, which likewise boosts the transfer speeds to 2800 MB/s, which is enough bandwidth to play back 6K, 8K, and super slo-mo source files, without transcoding.
LaCie’s final offering is the 1TB Rugged BOSS External SSD, which is a battery-operated device that lets you copy, review, and manage footage from virtually anywhere, without the need for a laptop or desktop system. Content can be ingested to its SATA SSD using its USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C port or integrated SD card reader at speeds up to 430 MB/s, while an integrated status screen lets you review files, monitor data transfers, and check the battery life. Using the LaCie BOSS app for iOS and Android, content may also be reviewed, named, and deleted from your smartphone. If one of your mobile devices needs charging, the Rugged BOSS can act as an external battery pack. Although it is not IP67 rated or able to withstand two tons of pressure as the other two are, it still is drop, splash, and dust resistant. It compatible with Windows 10 and macOS 10.12 or later, and retains the Adobe Creative Cloud All Apps plan for one month. To better interface with computers, mobile devices, and other memory cards, the Rugged BOSS includes a variety of cables and adapter.
