Optimized and ready for the upcoming Windows 11 and macOS Monterey 12, as well as current M1-based Macs, Parallels Desktop 17 is available as a Pro or Standard edition, both of which come boxed with a download code. While both editions will run Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 7, Linux, Ubuntu, Boot Camp, and macOS 10.13 and later on your Mac without rebooting, the Pro Edition is geared toward power users and developers. The Standard Edition supports 8GB of virtual memory and four virtual processors for each virtual machine and the Pro Edition increases this to 128GB of virtual memory and 32 virtual processors for each virtual machine. Features that are new to the Pro Edition include creating an independent VM from a linked clone and an updated Visual Studio plug-in that works with M1 Macs. The Pro Edition also includes free upgrades to newer versions, the ability to automate with CLI tools, integrations with Vagrant, Docker, Packer, and Minikube, functionality to debug, dump VM, or start an SSH session from the menu, 24/7 phone and email support, and more.
Building on the already-powerful features of Parallels Desktop 16, Parallels 17 will prompt users to install Windows 10 or ask them to select their existing Boot Camp installation. You’ll even be able to convert your current Boot Camp setup into a virtual machine or, on Intel®-based Macs, migrate your Windows or Linux installation. If you’re hesitant about switching over from Boot Camp because you don’t want to run Windows in a… windowed environment, Coherence Mode lets Windows occupy the entire screen, so you won’t even be able to tell you’re using a Mac. Parallels 17 maintains compatibility with Retina displays, Apple’s Touch Bar, and Touch ID.
Parallels 17 is sold as a one-year license that will need to be renewed annually. Also included with Parallels 17 Pro is the Parallels Toolbox, which offers more than 30 utilities to help simplify everyday tasks, such as cleaning your drive, securing private files, taking screenshots, or downloading videos, all with a single click, plus Remote Access, which lets you access your Mac from your iOS device, Android device, or browser with Parallels Access.
