Faster storage can help with more than just the basics of storing and moving files. It can improve performance of your computer and operating system, as well as give a boost to gaming and make your creative editing programs run smoother. Now for the latest and greatest tech to hit consumer storage: PCIe 4.0.NVME M.2 SSDs. Samsung has come through for us all with the 980 PRO series.

Building on its hugely popular and impressive 970 PRO drives, the Samsung 980 PRO offers compatibility for PCIe 4.0 interfaces, which will unlock read speeds of up to an incredible 7000 MB/s. Write is no slouch either, since that can top out at 5000 MB/s. If you haven’t moved on from conventional SATA-based SSDs yet, this means you can see an improvement of 12.7x and, even with the current-gen PCIe 3.0 M.2 drives, you’ll see up to twice the speed.

Samsung took care to ensure top-tier performance, starting with custom-designed V-NAND and DRAM and topped off with Samsung’s Dynamic Heat Guard Technology. Computers can run hard and get hot quickly; this system should help keep performance consistent over time.

It can be easy to overlook storage, but with the dramatic uptick in cameras able to shoot 6K and 8K footage, as well as raw video, having a lot of ultra-fast storage will be essential to smooth editing. And we can’t forget the gamers looking to get an edge and max out their settings for a truly enjoyable experience.

At launch, Samsung is offering the 980 PRO PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 SSD in 250GB, 500GB, and 1TB varieties. You shouldn’t even worry if you don’t have a PCIe 4.0 system quite yet because these drives are backward compatible and will provide you one more way to get ahead of the curve when you do decide to upgrade.
