WD Introduces WD Red SA500 2.5" and M.2 SSDs

Made in both 2.5" and 3.5" form factors, WD Red NAS HDDs are already well known among those who need an über-reliable drive for 1-8 bay NAS environments. However, if there has been one downside to WD Red drives, it is that their 5400 rpm cannot drive data transfer speeds to match their impressive reliability specs. That is, until now, since WD has taken the durability of Red and placed it within an SSD. The result is the WD Red SA500 SATA III Internal NAS SSD, which is available in both 2.5" / 7mm and M.2 2280 form factors. These new Red SSDs are suitable for use in home and medium-to-large NAS environments, but the all-flash storage component will boost system performance and responsiveness. Still made for 24/7 use, their durability and efficient caching of large files make them suitable for OLTP databases, multi-user environments, photo rendering, 4K and 8K video editing, virtualization, and other demanding applications. Try doing any of that with a 5400 rpm Red hard drive.

Specs-wise, WD Red SA500 SSDs feature sequential reads of up to 560 MB/s, sequential writes of up to 530 MB/s, and a terabytes written (TBW ) rating of up to 600TB. Reliability is further increased with 1 in 1,017 non-recoverable errors per bits read and a mean time to failure (MTTF) rating of 2 million hours.
