Sonos is, once again, upping the ante on what a plug-and-play surround sound system can be with the new Arc Ultra Soundbar and Sub 4 Wireless Subwoofer. Building on the popular Sonos Arc and Sub 3, the Arc Ultra and Sub 4 promise new levels of sound clarity and surround sound immersion in a sleeker and more elegant design.
The Arc Ultra houses a whopping fourteen drivers—three more than the Arc—consisting of seven tweeters, six midwoofers, and a built-in subwoofer. Each driver, engineered by Sonos, is precisely placed and angled within the soundbar to deliver 9.1.4 channels of sound all on its own. Fifteen class-D digital amplifiers, perfectly tuned to the soundbar’s unique acoustic architecture, power each driver individually to optimize the sound for every channel. Designed with their new Sound Motion technology, the Sonos Arc Ultra envelopes you in precision sound from every direction. With Sound Motion, Sonos has found a way to deliver improved and more dynamic sound in a sleeker design.
To further improve accuracy and clarity, integrated microphones and Sonos Trueplay software allow the Arc Ultra to “listen” to your space and fine tune the EQ based on the room’s acoustics. With the Arc Ultra, Trueplay tuning is not just available for iOS, but for Android devices as well. Additionally, a more advanced adjustable dialog enhancement feature will help you never miss a word.
Of course, this is a Sonos product, so you can expect the same features we’ve come to know and love from the brand, including wireless music streaming and seamless integration with their other products. In addition to what I’ve mentioned, compared to the Arc Soundbar, the touch controls have been updated, and Bluetooth has been added for convenience.
Speaking of seamless integration with their other products, a newly designed subwoofer, the Sonos Sub 4, is being released to complement the new soundbar. While the Arc Ultra is designed to provide full surround sound immersion by itself, its true potential is unlocked when paired with the Sub 4.
Being familiar with the Sonos line for quite a few years, I can confidently tell you that every one of their speakers benefit from the addition of a Sonos Sub. First, the larger woofers and dual opposing driver design provide low-frequency output just not possible from smaller speakers, with less vibration than most competing products. Second, is how smart the system is. When you pair the soundbar with the subwoofer, the soundbar stops trying to reproduce the frequencies that you’re now getting from the sub. This focuses the power on the highs and the midrange to achieve greater depth and accuracy. Furthermore, the sound is well blended and even, not sounding like it’s coming from different components.
With the same versatile placement and Trueplay EQ capability, the Sub 4 offers increased processing power and memory, along with improved wireless connectivity, compared to the previous model. This could set a new standard for what is expected in a plug-and-play surround sound system, and I can’t wait to hear it!
