Aputure has a new point-source LED that aims to balance portability and power. The STORM 400x, available with V-Mount and Gold Mount plates, is a 400W bi-color monolight with high color accuracy from Aputure’s innovate BLAIR chipset. The light also has advanced dimming, a versatile Bowens mount, and a durable, IP65-rated build.
The STORM’s BLAIR (blue, lime, amber, indigo, red) LED chipset gives the light useful green/magenta color correction, bolstered by a wide 2500-10,000K CCT range and high color accuracy markings. The brand says the 400x covers 87% of the Rec. 709 color gamut, and uses advanced diode color mixing to maximize power. The light itself is 8.71 lb, while the control box is 6.6 lb, very reasonable for a fixture with this level of output.
The 400x has a “ProLock” locking Bowens S mount for compatibility with modifiers of all shapes and sizes. Control options are as you’d expect: Sidus Link, LumenRadio CRMX, and 16-bit 5-pin DMX512. The light can use four different dimming curves—linear, exponential, logarithmic, and s-shaped—has nine built-in effects, and can be switched between four fan modes: Smart, High, Medium, and Silent.

The fixture, alongside the included controller box, 35° reflector, head cable, AC cable, and stand clamp, can all fit into the custom soft carry case for easy transport. Whether you’re working on a big production with a fleet of BLAIR-assisted lights, or a small on-location shoot that needs a strong, accurate, battery-powered fixture, the STORM 400x is well worth a look.
