Evolved Control: The Profoto Connect Pro Wireless Transmitter

0Share

Profoto’s Connect Pro is a modern update to wireless communication across Profoto’s expansive lighting ecosystem. The new transmitter offers greater control and improved overall performance while assuming the cool aesthetic and streamlined interface that has become synonymous with Profoto’s name.

Front and center on the Connect Pro is a bright LCD screen that displays the power settings of each light in the same crisp typeface used on A-series lights. Battery life and Bluetooth status are always also visible for quick reference. The Connect Pro’s interface adopts a design similar to the controls of the A10 studio light, consisting of a control wheel and button for menu navigation, dedicated modeling light and AUTO buttons for quick access, and four group control buttons. For familiarity or nostalgia, the display can be re-configured to match the traditional Air Remote layout.

A half dozen versions of the Connect Pro are available, depending on your style of photography or model of camera being used. For photographers whose work requires TTL (AUTO) and High-Speed Sync (Hi-S) functionality, compatible transmitters are available for Canon, Nikon, Sony, FUJIFILM, and, for the first time, Leica cameras. A non-TTL version that allows manual control across brands is also available. The Connect Pro can control up to six groups and operate on an eye-watering 100 Air channels, taming even the most advanced lighting setups while avoiding interference from adjacent productions. Like previous models, it uses a 2.4 GHz frequency that extends remote control up to 1,000 feet and TTL/HSS to 330 feet. Three AAA batteries power up to 50 hours of use. A padded case is included for storage and transport.

Which Profoto Remote is Right for You?

The Connect Pro becomes the third option and de facto flagship remote for photographers using Profoto lighting systems. Photographers whose workflow require less nuanced on-unit control may want to first consider the Connect Wireless Transmitter, a stripped-down device that can simply be set to AUTO with the turn of a knob or manually adjusted using the Profoto App. Compatible with Canon, Nikon, Sony, or Olympus TTL systems, the Connect is an unassuming yet effective choice for small-scale productions. Photographers averse to adding a smart device to their workflow or requiring more than the Connect’s single group and 8 channel settings, however, will want to upgrade to the Pro. Although the Connect Pro effectively replaces Profoto’s Air Remote as the professional’s choice, the legacy model shares many baseline features with the Pro and will continue to work with compatible camera systems into the foreseeable future. Photographers looking for Leica TTL functionality or a non-TTL controller will need to upgrade to the Connect Pro. On the other hand, photographers using Olympus cameras will need to stick with the Air Remote or abandon TTL.
