Profoto Announces the L1600D Mono-LED, Their First Cinema Light

Swedish brand Profoto, a legendary name in the photo world, is releasing the L1600D Mono-LED, a compact, versatile LED COB light built for professional and demanding cinema production environments. This fixed 5700K light can be used as a key or fill on set and in studio work, with a CRI of 97 and a max power draw of 1600W.

The L1600D has dual mounting options, Profoto and Bowens, for use with virtually any stand, as well as accessories and modifiers in the Profoto Light Shaping Tool system. The L1600D doesn’t have a ballast or a floor unit, making it easier to work with and simpler to move around sets. Profoto claims this also makes the light far more energy efficient than traditional ballast and head setups. With a swivel yolk, the L1600D comes in at around 25.8 lb, so you probably won’t be tossing this into a carry-on bag.

The L1600D can put out 3850 lux at 16.4’ with its built-in wide reflector. Throw on a Profoto Boost Reflector to shrink the beam from 30º to 12º while upping the output to a staggering 49,000 lux. The L1600D uses Profoto’s proprietary HyrdoCTech for quiet and efficient water cooling, plus two silent 140mm fans. It carries an IP54 classification for water and dust resistance. CRMX, DMX, Bluetooth, and Profoto’s Air system are built in.

Profoto receives a lot of love from photographers, so it will be interesting to see if cinematographers and gaffers take to these products as well. The fixed color temperature narrows the potential use cases for the L1600D, but its high output, rich connectivity, and simplified design could appeal to many discerning creatives.
